Yeah I was a big fan always pumped for his fights since he implemented SW/bjj so well and was effective at it unlike many others

Guy I know broke another guys arm in a "straightner" after the guy sucker punched him in a bar a few nights earlier

Guy was only about 5'7 and 155lb and the guy who had his arm broke was about 280 and 6ft 3

It was in the MMA room at the gym
Big guy pinned the small guy to the floor with his arm on his throat he just wrapped his legs around his arm and into an arm bar.
The big guy started tapping but he just broke his arm anyway, he said, "theres no ref here pal"

Also Mir was, or still is pretty big, so he would not have a problem with an average person even without bjjxxx voodoo.

He was my favorite fighter. Was pissed that he lost the second fight with Lesnar, for the title at UFC 100. He was better on the feet and with finishers on the ground, but Brock sandwiched him in the perfect spot, and used his size and strength to ground and pound him.

What is best style for a 70 year old man to fight off a young mugger?

Should he go for the arm break, a choke, a boxing knockout, or an eye poke?

It's probably more satisfaction for breaking the arm of some cocky arrogant fuck. It just feels good

Also in a standup fight there is also always the chance that someone with decent puncing power gets a lucky  hit at the wrong moment and rocks you. Ground game pretty much completly takes out that chance.

Fortunately, the odds of getting into a fight with Frank Mir are very slim.

Not likely you'll run into Mike Tyson either.

What you really need for self-defense is a method to quickly put the hurt on the attacker, giving you time to get away.

Just about all self-defense systems are designed for this, not for fighting someone in the octagon.

For example, the well-known karate punch is targeted for the solar plexus.  One solid blow to the solar plexus will incapacitate the opponent, giving enough time to get away.  No need to roll around for several minutes on the floor.

A wise person will avoid places where violence tends to happen, like in bars with drunk people.

Don't get drunk yourself and become an asshole.

Both of the above I have done of course.  :D

I disagree. There is times where you are challanged and you have to stand your ground as a man. There is no strike and run.

To be able to stand up for yourself in a street fight having ground game is a trump card. If you end up scrapping on the ground and you know your bjj you can easily put someone who is not versed in it in a rear naked choke, or better an arm bar where you break his arm or shoulder ligaments.

It doesn't matter how strong the guy your facing is. His isolated single joint can not stand up to the torque of the most powerful part of your body, your core i.e. the torque of your hips.

Is this a fight on your playground when you are 10?

You let your pride get you into what Mir calls a "duel".

Just dumb.

Once you reach a certain age you realize how stupid it is.

There is always someone tougher than you.  They may also have a weapon to really f*ck you up.

I do not disagree about ground fighting skills being useful.

Now, if you are really worried about defending yourself on the street carry a weapon.

Not even Frank Mir can survive being stabbed or shot.

Even though trained in hand-2-hand I just about always also carry a knife.

You carry a knife? I would prefer to fight with fists. I guess you live in a violent place.

You have illusions about street fights and fairness.

Two noble men squaring off.  At the end they shake hands.

You're a good guy.  I mean this sincerely.

Unfortunately you will probably end up dead when your head is stomped.

you must live in a real shithole if guys go around with knives at bars and out about.

if you live in such areas you failed in life and shouldn't be out and about but try to improve you life and location.

but I guess you live in a non-white area in general

Hmm, I don't expect fairness, but carrying a knife means the other is likely to end up dead. I would rather give an incapacitating beating than kill someone. If someone pushes you or punches you would you reach for the knife straight away or only as a last resort? I walk in my town at night without fear but its not America.

Thanks for the advices.

Since you live in Beverly Hills there is no reason for you to learn self-defense.

Just call your lawyer when threatened.

Fair point. I never really get into altercations because I do live in a good area. But if I do I know how to stand my ground and people don't go around here carrying knives. I guess the world is a different place these days where people are cowardly bitches that resort to knives and guns.

When people start to carry knives it leads to people carrying guns and then you know it is a place where you dont want to live or raise kids anyways.

Got news for you, people actually do carry knives and guns in the real world.

Go outside sometime.

Go ahead and stand your ground though tough guy.

They will f*ck you up.

A fight is always a risk. Are you going around armed at all times or why so defensive about this. A man should have pride and that means not being a thug low life going around town with hidden knives and what not.

I think your way of thinking is a cope, because you don't know how to fight.
