Greatest Mr . O
« on: May 02, 2006, 10:27:20 AM »
When it comes to being a champion in BB, to be the man you have to beat the man or wait for him to retire..

Lee Haney beat the most Mr. Os as a champion

Samir Bannout
Chris Dickerson
Sergio Olivia
Dorian Yates
Ronnie Coleman

**(Larry Scott, Arnold, Franco all retired and he competed against Zane in 83 but did not win the contest, however he did pl ace high than him)

Haney Interview

"Pattern my physique after Arnold, Robbie You Kow who, Rory Challender and Danny Padilla..."
"Balance, Symetry..."

Dorian : "New Norm..., not hte norm that I opitimized, but as I said before Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.."
"Mass when it goes a bit beyond, and looses the balance and symetry, it epitimizes the .....(didn tsay but implied the Bad Side of things)

"265 -270, is a hard dream for a youngster... stunted the growth (of BB)"

One Name that he would of loved to compete against...
"Ronnie would of pushed me alot"

He's humble. Unlike most getbigers, knows Robinson as one of the true greats and uncrowned Olympians. Rob would've humbled Haney and equally flawed Yates (both were all-torsos with gaping balance issues elsewhere). Rob's only real issues were smooth thighs and so-so calves; not big overall issues.

Huh?  Haney never competed even once against Ronnie Coleman.  They were basically in different eras.  Coleman's first Olympia was in 92 (16th place), the year after Haney retired.

There's no "probably" about it. Bodybuilding and it's industry would be in a much better place if it's participants tried to emulate this man.

For sure.  Arnold may be the highest profile Mr. O but if you counted all the lives that have been personally changed for the better by a Mr. O then it would be Haney by a landslide.

Haney was ruler of all.  While I was a teenager he was definitely a role model for me, which kept me out of plenty of trouble no doubt.

That my friends is why Haney rules in my book.  Class with mass.  Incredibly humble, and never arrogant.  I give this to Dorian; he seems like a really good guy.  Never came off as a cocky shit.  Ronnie also appears to be a good guy.  Jeez, when you are his size you don't have to be a prick to people.  I find it interesting that the guys who have won the last 22 Mr. Olympia's are amongst the most decent guys in the sport.  Usually, the superstars are the assholes.  It is true in tennis, golf, football or basketball.  They believe the hype.  I give credit to our last three champions for this rare quality.  Arnold was a prick, but I love the guy. Smart son of a bitch.

Arnold was the greatest EVER, he made bodybuilding what it is, made it (somewhat) mainstream, he's inspired so many people to work out,  most of my competitive bodybuilder friends cite Arnold as the reason they started training in the first place. How many people has Haney inspired to work out? not dissing him, but come on.. let's be realistic.

Arnold was in denial as he himself said.  I would say pretty insecure.  It takes a real asshole to humilitate somebody with a disability and an emotionally overbearing father.  Yeah, that's confidence alright.   ::)

Notice how Arnold didn't pull that shit with Franco?  I'm sure he would avoid that with people whose IQs are in the double digits.   :-\

Sounds like Arnold got to you, too ;D

A lot of that's according to Arnold, who's always enjoyed shaping the perceptions of those who don't know any better. Easy for him to make those claims after the fact, knowing ahead of time who was going to win each time.

He wasn't quite as confident on neutral ground when Sergio called him out and he wouldn't answer the challenge. Conveniently, Arnold never tells this part of the story.. ;D

Mentzer didn't buy it either.

That was also timing; not that he'd of had the same impact but I'm sure Haney would've come across well had he had the chance to be in Pumping Iron. It's no coincidence IMO that most of the major characters in PI save Arnold and Waller are basically idiots who can barely talk.

I remember the face picture of Mentzer and Arnold arguing at the 1980 Mr. Olympia. Arnold looks arrogant even while arguing ;D

Priceless shot; Mentez wasn't having any of it.

Small cameo of Mentzer sipping at drink at Gold's at the beginning of PI when Arnold comes in; completely ignored by Arnold in the scene and overlooked in the movie. They only interviewed stiffs as Arnold's competition-not a word from Nubret, Robinson, Oliva, Draper...
