Japan Has Lost The TV Market To Korea and China

I went to Best Buy last week and was amazed at the change in TV brands over the last twenty years.  Japanese companies used to dominate, now it's Korean and Chinese brands.  I had never even heard of Hisense and TCL, but now their both in the top four globally.  Japanese brands like Toshiba, Sharp, and Panasonic have disappeared.

TCL and Hisense have some higher end models, but their bread and butter are cheaper models at 1/2- 2/3 the price of the Japanese. I keep tvs for a long time, so I'm always surprised at how cheap and large they've gotten. I remember the family tv was a 27" Mitsubishi that was something like $800 in early 90's money.   

Soon, we'll all be watching riots from the comfort of our homes on $500 100 inchers .

When I was in my teens we still had a 13 inch black and white TV with twist knobs and bunny ears.  That was the only TV we had. 

When VCR's first came out we would rent the VCR with the movie.

I’m with rbc on this one I only buy Samsung tvs they never break and never once had an issue with them

Some of the TV brands are now rebadged Chinese models. Not just made in China, but other models except with another brand name put on it that they've paid to use.

Telefunken is one of them from what I've heard.

From looking at the data, they sell better in Negro markets. Maybe we should market to them?

Ditto. I've always had great experience with LGs.

It's worth noting that Samsung buy the screens for their TVs from LG. (As do a number of other high-end manufacturers)

I post what I'm interested in.  Of all the technology over the last twenty years, the computer and the flat screen are the ones that most impress me.

Fujitsu’s flat-screen plasma television, introduced in 1997, was literally a promise out of science fiction. At about 3 inches thick with a screen that measured 42 inches diagonal.

Star Trek predicted the future with the view screen on the bridge of the USS Enterprise. It was huge. Even more futuristic, it was flat—and mounted to the bulkhead!
