Speaking as a wall and ceilings contractor, the ladder pictured is definitively not a 5 ft ladder. You can tell by the rungs and from seeing a lot of ladders in my time.

Yup. His family is in danger as long as he listens to these people. The same people who tried to kill him. But because they failed he now knows: 1) they are serious and 2) he can trust them to keep their promise.
