Special Field Order No. 15 was a military order issued by Union General William T. Sherman on January 16, 1865, during the Civil War. The order confiscated about 400,000 acres of land along the coastline from Charleston, South Carolina to Jacksonville, Florida, and as far inland as 30 miles. This included Georgia's Sea Islands and barrier islands that were once home to plantations.
