my inner calves are atrophying , outer calves still same

Age and nerve damage no doubt, lost almost 1-5 inches off my calves over the last 2 years

Where does this 'nerve damage' even come from, were you injecting into your calves a lot? ???

It comes always from lower back.
This means that you are destroying your intervertebral discs.
Never do a squat, deadlift in your life or leg press that is not circular.
This is of no use for building muscle and will save you a difficult old age.

The funny thing is when I go hiking or cycling or stuff like that I spot atrophied calves regularly even on average Joes and Karens who probably have never seen a gym from the inside ever. Just some fat housewife in her 50s with one fat and one completely atrophied calf and I'm like WTF, how did that happen? lol

What's a circular leg press?

Agree with your other points.  I stopped squatting and deadlifting after a back injury 15 years ago -- and haven't had any back issues since.  Hasn't stopped me from building muscle, either.

It's a matter of technique, people have problems because 99% of em are doing compound exercises wrong.

Platz is still squatting, still got his calves and has no knee or back issues at 70

Platz has a unique anatomical morphology similar to that of a dwarf which has protected him from injury. For a Platz, you have millions of practitioners who will blow out their lower backs, knees and hips.
I guess he still doesn't know and has never asked himself the question of how from a mechanical point of view he got away with it and why he can go all the way down without rounding his back.

Because he also worked on his flexibility. Most modern-day dysfunctional BB who lack any flexibility are probably better off with machines, I agree.

You think the problem is in the back affecting nerves? I always notice these things and I saw Yates also had the "dead calf."  ;D

I have major problems now after deadlifting heavy for 25 years but no calf atrophy yet.

Other than shrugs, my least favourite exercise. Never liked it. Could be to do with my height, but they've always felt awkward and uninspiring

True but maybe also saved some backs. I was in major agony now for 2 weeks but did a deadlift session on friday and miraculously the back felt better. It's like my problems always come when I lay off all back training.

Deadlifting has been everything to me, I can't overemphasize the importance lol. A holy mission lol. In my little powerlifting gym no one has beat my max yet  ;D

But we are different. For Platz it was squats.

One man's meat is another man's poison
Some people like Deadlifts so I wouldn't say don't do them if you get no problems.
I prefer to train each part of my back with hyperextension, rows, pullovers, chins
I understand some do Abbreviated type training so Deadlifts probably are important for them.
Each to his own..

All the people I trained with loved them, too. I started at a hardcore gym so these kinds of exercises were expected of me, with the elders pushing me too hard on things like that. They did it out of trying to help me but I always hated certain exercises. Pushing me too hard caused a permanent shoulder injury I have to this day. I curse that guy every morning when I wake up.  :)

Powerclean and press, I could deal with as it felt like I was actually doing something inspiring. Deadlifts just made me dizzy and feeling awkward. Did you ever do "all round the world" which was a powerclean and press with then a behind the neck drop and squat; then a shoulder press and back to the front to drop it where you started? Not sure what it's actually called but that was a great cardio workout lift

"why can he go all the way down without rounding his back"

Same as i can & all Olympic lifters - its called flexibility
work on being flexible - simple   ::)

wouldnt that depend on what the problem was?

Is AJ an orthapedic specialist or chiropractor?

Exactly  :D My training partner had won the deadlift event in one World Championships. He probably bitterly hated me but I made sure never to mention it or brag ;D

Rubiel's calves measure 21.7 or 55 cm, larger than his arms.

James DeMelos were 22"

Steve davis had some great calves as I recall
the bodybuilder no t the snooker player

Davis really had a fantastic physique.

Do an image search on him to see some incredible pics.

Neither.  He sold exercise machines for the back.
