I never denied that Ronnie had more definition, vascularity and striations than Dorian. But two things. First, while that's true for most of the body, I don't think it applies to calves. Secondly, while Ronnie was more separated and striated, Dorian had greater hardness. You keep favoring Ronnie's qualities while dismissing Dorian's. The first pic below shows that you're wrong about Ronnie having more detailed calves. Look how all the muscles in the calves are separated, vascular and even striated. Look at the soleus!

In the second pic, look at how much harder Dorian looks compared to Ronnie.

in that shot, he looks not bad. but conditioning can make the difference between first and 10th..

but it wasn't just conditioning that held ronnie back. it was muscle mass that filled out his frame giving him a better look.

eg. look how much thickness and muscle mass he gained between 97 and 99.

just look at the difference in quad and arm mass alone, nevermind everything else:

I know ND likes to claim that Ronnie was 260 in 97 and 257 in 99.

but clearly, we can see that he was visibly and noticably bigger in 99 than in 97:

Dorian is better than Ronnie in some ways.

His back detail was better.

He had better calves.

His chest remained fuller in the front lat spread, and his entire torso, sans arms, did look better in this pose.

His density was superior although I suppose that is debatable.

That said, Ronnie also had his strengths...

Overall, I would still give it to Ronnie. I guess it depends what you go for. As subjective as bodybuilding is, I would still give it to Ronnie with both at their best!

I think it's close to a wash also, and its going to come down to what the judges like better on that particular day.

but this is the problem that ND and Co. do not seem to get:

dorian looks amazing standing alone.

put the double pose next to Ronnie at his best, and his quads look bad, his taper looks worse, and his arms get left in the dust.

everything is relative to your competition.

BTW, I think Ronnie's taper is too extreme, I feel it hurts the flow of his physique. But thats just to my eyes, and in my opinion. I hate the look of an Orville Burke and Brian Buchanan too; Extreme taper does not a complete physique make.

I think Flex had all the tools necessary to beat Dorian, minus calves.. He just never put it together.

Look at the fuckin shadow he casts! I noticed Dorian's obliques naturally were pretty thick, but when he tensed, they contracted very densely creating a tight waist. Even in 97. Too bad he didn't practice tensing his obliques all the time.

Yates absolutely destroyed everyone at the 93 pre-judging.
I think a lot of BB's need to take a clue from Dorian on posing.
They don't hold the poses long enough for the judges to actually make a judgment.
