Coleman had the better genetics, but from a bodybuilding standpoint, Yates was more complete, especially due to his superior conditioning and grainy look with all that mass.

Had they competed in the same era both at there peaks based on judging criteria
Dorian wins. Though they didn’t compete together at their peak so it’s irrelevant
& futile who was better / Wins.
They were both the best in their eras - End of.

This is where I think it comes to a matter of taste and preference as they have both have taken it to the highest level. Ronnie is bigger and more freakier. Even Yates said in an interview with Palumbo that Coleman was the only bber that he looked at and said, "WTF?"

Yates was just carved out of stone. Huge but still grainy and hard beyond belief. A quality, like vascularity, that doesn't show up well in still pics. He also had no glaring weak points. Ronnie didn't have pleasing ab developing (even before the gut) and his calves were lacking, especially the left one.

I'm in the Yates camp on this one but props for this thread going on 13 years.

That is a much better breakdown and a more accurate evaluation. I tend to go by just overall impression which isn't nearly as accurate and more subjective. If I remember correctly you use to compete which would explain why your evaluations are more in-depth.

I don't think I ever mentioned competing, but I did 2 shows in 1995, 1 in 1996 and another in 1997.  Then in 1998 I moved out of my parents house and while I've often thought of donning the sacred thong again, I just have too much going on to ever put everything into it.  Maybe a classic bb show when I turn 50.  Then both my kids will be in college and I'll have the time. 

Thanks for the kudos on my analysis.  I watch Dorian at the 96 German Grand Prix and even with one bad bicep feel he's unbeatable.  It's like he goes out and does the quarter turns and it's all over.

I think ronnie is the goat....

But I think Dorian vs ronnie is very close.

 You make a very good point regarding what Dorian could have been capable off had he not overdieted for his shows, he could of potentially achieved ronnies level of mass but with more hardness than ronnie ( even though Ron was in very respectable condition) but we never saw this from him. On the other hand though ronnie had the better overall lines and arms, ham glutes.... But it's close.

Greatest all time is ronnies 03 Olympia freak show, I don't think Dorian could have ever beaten that look.
