From my view when I was in college in the late 70's and early 80's the only ones with tats were veterans and bikers.  Having them made you unique.  I now live near the beach. I see families where the grandma, grandpa, wife, husband and teenage kid have them. How is that cutting edge or cool?  I've seen a cooling off of tats lately with young adults lately and that is surprising after a 30 year explosion.

It's only me. I don't wear earrings or have tats. That's my preference. I don't wear flip flops in public unless I'm on the beach too or clown colored basketball sneakers. What ever you want to do then do it. I also think it's very fag like for a man to have a pony tail.
