Being broke sucks
« on: September 10, 2024, 04:32:02 PM »
Due to several medical expenses with my wife, even with insurance, I’m basically living paycheck to paycheck now. I don’t even have enough to pay a $10 copay at the dentist tomorrow (I get paid Thursday… actually Friday, but my bank makes the funds available a day early). This sucks, and I just wanted to vent.

What does this statement have to do with health care?  The point of my statement is that your financial state should have no relation to your ability to access health care...

Money gets you healthcare but what I think is probably worse is it gets you more justice. If you have money for lawyers you can skate on some things. This does feel unfair to me but I don't know what can be done about it. But regarding the healthcare most people here don't have private health insurance, costs too much, so you get inferior care sometimes and especially waiting times are catastrophic.

Should we be responsible for paying other people's medical bills now? The problem with medical for all is it reduces the level of care. No one works for free.

I just paid thousands for my pec surgery yesterday out of pocket. It was not cheap. Should other getbig members have paid for it? Do we want socialized health care? By having for profit health care we have the option of paying for better service. I also booked a flight and booked economy that is what socialized health care would get you basic economy and an advil. You want first class with whiskey with a brand new tendon taken from an incarcerated  Chinese dissident you got to pay.

It does suck. Your goal as working person should be to put yourself into a position where you are sustainable even when things go sideways.  This requires some planning, but it is doable.  The last time I left a job (my supervisor retired so I left; a common thing in my industry) I had no financial worries.  I had set plenty of money aside and most importantly, I had income from rental properties I acquired in prior years.  My two vehicles were already paid off… and my rental income was more than enough to pay my bills and keep me afloat until I started a new position.

Glad you are doing well.  When I retired I wondered how I could make ends meet? My retirement income is only 65% of what I was making. I have the same expenses. I cut down on spending and my house should be paid off in the worse case scenario in two years and at best one year. That should free up a ton of money.  I also got rid of all credit cards too. It's Amex or a debit card now. Both cars are good running cars but they are old and paid off.

On a side note it's amazing how so many people my age become rich when their parents die. They often get a paid off house that could be worth 500K plus.  Then I see friends my age buying incredible cars and lavish vacations.  My mother when she died gave me everything she had and that was $600 bucks.  My wife's mother left her 20K when she died. We didn't come from money.

This is a good time to go through your expenses and see where you mismanaged that $10.
