I did a semester in college in Upstate NY and there was one dorm which was mostly blacks.

There was a wanted poster for some guy from NYC who went up there to go to school, but never went to class and just committed crimes living somewhere unknown.

I don’t remember the spelling but his name was a black spelling of the word “Unique.”

I dated a girl named ShaVodka.

No joke. She had the rare combination of being able to be cute and smoking hot at the same time. She pulled it off nicely.

Another girl was named Sharlonda, and....

Im serious: Tabbia Tabby Tabb. First name Tabbia (like tibia but with an ah sound) middle Tabby (like the cat breed) last name Tabb (like the diet soda)

All black. Tabbia waa a cop. She told me she was planning on quitting the police force. I asked why? She said "Sheeittt, I made mo' money dancing at the strip club" I clarified "so you were a stripper before becoming a cop? And you plan on going back to stripping?" Then I said you might make easy cash but what about medical benefits and a pension? She said "at one to two thousand dollars a night, I don't gotta worry about any of that shit"

Where do these American black names originate, what language if any are they based on? It must be something as there's similarities between them. Is there anything "African" in it? They sound
childish somehow, just stupid. Their speech is completely impoverished and stupid. In theory they could have developed a more classy dialect I think  ???

Just saw some documentary where some blacks were fighting to keep teaching Afrikaans in schools in SA. Oppressor/colonial language but yhey liked it.

Used to be in 70's and 80's it seemed like they were trying to copy French names to sound more elegant a lot of "Le" and "La" as a prefix to a name or "ique" for a suffix, such as Latoya and a lot of  "Monique".  The theme of elegance, wealth, sophistication was often way overdone in the ghettos to overcompensate for the extreme squalor, poverty. A guy might live in a house that's hardly worth 20K but he'll wear a thousand dollar watch or shoes. Might live in a HUD home or be on some form of wellfare but insists on driving a cadillac.

I don't live in the ghetto anymore so Ive kind of lost touch but I don't often hear those names anymore just like it's rare to see black dudes in gators anymore either.

Often there will be a commercial on advertising for a new wonder drug.  For example there are a lot of black babies recently added to the rolls with the name "Ozempic" (boys) and "Ozempica"  (girls).

I grew up with kids that were born in the 70's, 80's. There were usually 4 ways a black kid was named -

1) Regular names. These were just regular family names that were past down*. Lots of Srs, Jrs, III's, and 4ths.

2) Lots of Muslim names because their parents were involved with - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five-Percent_Nation . Sometimes the names weren't even Muslim, but kinda sounded that way to the parents.

3) Lots of "African" names like Shaka, Zaire, Afrika, Kenya, Kenyatta, etc...... because of Pan African movements here in the States, say 65-95 especially.

4) The White-Black  combo. This was a combo of a "White" name or non-descript name with an odd prefix, spelling, or both. So you get Shakenneth, LaVanessa, Antforney, etc....  Old school Blacks used to joke that it was just to fuck with White people. But I've had them explain they didn't want their kids to have "White" names, so they've add something to it to be unique, sorta like what Beakdoctor mentioned.

* I've known 4 Adolf's/ Adolph's in my life. One was an old Jewish guy that was born before the war. The rest were young to middle aged Black dudes.

"What would you like to name your baby, Johonda?"

"I would like Shanequa."

"Just spell it for me for the birth certificate.

"That's Zneobby."
