A man of many talents, Amos graduated from Colorado State University with a sociology degree. He also played for the American Football League and became a Golden Globes boxing champion after college. RIP

I met him many years ago. It was just me, him and his elderly mother.  I pretended I didn't know who he was. I said, "I know you but I don't know why?"  He said, "Maybe you know me from Good Times?"  Told him I never heard of it. "Roots maybe?"
I shook my head, "I've never seen it."  He was smiling but he looked confused.  In the back of my mind I remember seeing him sing Accentuate the Positive on the Michael Douglas show.  I blurted out, "Accentuate the Positive!"  His mother broke out in a big smile.  Amos said, "How old are you that you remember that?"  He caught on that I knew who he was all along.

He was a Division I football player and a champion armature boxer. Big dude.

I first noticed him in Maude 1972-78 (he was Florida’s husband; they called him Henry Evans back then)… then Roots… then Good Times (they renamed his character James) and he became America’s dad: the no nonsense father of three.  Decades later I would learn from gay friends that they all had crushes on him. I didn’t see it as a kid, but now I do.  He was pretty beefy for a TV dad and hyper masculine.  He left the series on bad terms and seemed to disappear for years.  I was pleasantly surprised to see him turn up in Die Hard 2 (1990).  Everyone speaks of him fondly.  May he rest in power.

I didn't realize his resume was that deep.  Is AFL the 1st iteration of the NFL or another league like the XFL?

AFL merged with the NFL. it was a rival league at first, leading up to a showdown, what we know now as the super bowl.

Shannon Amos claimed her father was a victim of elder abuse in June 2023 after he had been hospitalized in Memphis, Tennessee. The alleged “elder abuse, neglect, and fiduciary abuse” were “believed to be perpetrated by a trusted caregiver,” she said. An investigation was opened by authorities in Colorado, but no other information was made available.

That's bad. So she did not contact him for over a month. When your parent is that age you should be in touch with them almost daily!

Of all the accolades being thrown his way, I'm surprised there hasn't been any mention yet of his mammoth cock.  By all accounts it was in the horse family.

True no BS Getbigger, RIP.  Strong dad presence on Good Times, called bullshit on many things.  The were dealing with many of the exact same issues as today on that show 50 years ago.  Crooked politicians exploiting the black community for votes then disappearing until the next election.
