probably never even worked his calves

Bingo. He said he was born with them:

"Mike Matarazzo, whose calves are about the best developed in the sport, says that they’re a genetic gift he inherited them from his father, who never trained and who had even bigger calves than Mike’s."

Greg Zulak was an excellent bodybuilding author. No BS hypocrisy, but always very informative articles.

No doubt you have better arms

Come on man, it's not sbout disparaging the man, it can also be about why he didn't place even better than he did. I'm comparing him to a certain "pro standard" on hardness in this case. If I say no one is harder looking than Dorian I'm not saying my arms are better than any other pro, some guys set standards who everyone is compared to  8)

They had a pic of his dad years ago (mid 90's) in Flex. He was a mailman and did most of his deliveries by walking cart in the city. He had absolutely monstrous calves, that he attributed to genetics and his mail route. Looked like a normal pudgy guy, till you got down to the calves that would put 99.9% of bodybuilders to shame.

Please, correct me if I’m wrong but 5lbs of red meat per day is a pretty scaled up version of the Elimination diet, which is quite healthy actually. Maybe not at the level he was consuming but even in off season I had never seen him fat. So basically 400g protein 360g fat and 6,000 calories. That really doesn’t seem horrible compared to any random McDonald’s eating fat fuck out there. Plus, it’s lacking all the processing chems food has here. my best guess would be that he never paid any attention or even had any bloodwork done, and he probably had extremely high hemoglobin and extremely high hematocrit, and it basically gummed up his system and his whole cardiovascular system up

If you look at my post above,he was guest posing and was over 300 pounds and looked terrible.....he may just have then a layoff....not dispariging Mike cuz he was a great bodybuilder.

I was at the 1996 Night of Champions.

I saw Mike Mentzer there.

Matarazzo competed. He was top 5.

Afterwards, Matarazzo got so upset with Mentzer because Mentzer said that Matarazzo was gaunt. Mentzer did coverage of the show for one of the magazines.

I was in agreement with Mentzer. But he probably should not have used the word “gaunt”. LOL. Mentzer was pretty accurate with that assessment. Mike was still big and ripped. But it looked like he was 10-12lbs smaller than expected (I guess that is better than showing up too heavy).

Mentzer was very complimentary of Flex, Ronnie, and Gunter (they were all in shape, and displayed great muscle mass and fullness)

Matarazzo spoke to a Flex Magazine and he thrashed Mentzer. It was probably very awkward at Gold’s in Venice for a while after that.
When he dieted down for a pro contest he did look "thin." Yes, I know, he was a jacked 250lbs. But he disappeared from the side. I remember Ronnie just dwarfing him in '98 but they were close to the same bodyweight. Mike didn't have a 3d look like the great pro's

Mike had an amazing ability to be inspiring and interesting. Hate what happened to him, but was a huge inspiration to me as a kid in the 90's.

That would be his pre contest diet.

Worthless to check out a calves workout of somebody who was born with calves like that ::)

But he was a pretty good-lookin' dude for a heavyweight BB (no homo), u gotta give him that. He kinda had this all-American hero look to him with his chiseled jaw-line :D

Big yet still pleasant to the eye. Would assume those are what pro delts look like without SEO, and what great abs look like without insulin and moderate GH.

Delts? Which delts? I can't see any (the guy in the background neither) ???
