Mike was among my favorites, especially with his crazy calves, biceps, and that cannonball delt-trap combo from his Mega Mass commercials. I still can’t figure out why he didn’t improve after his 1991 overall USA win. He may have added some size, but that extra weight seemed to take away from the sharpness of his 233-pound pro qualifier look.
I don’t know much about the specifics of drugs, but I wonder if his Mega Mass look was influenced by heavy oral steroids like Anadrol. He looked incredibly full and thick in those photos. When he came in with a tighter midsection, though, he didn’t quite have that same cannonball delt appearance.
I also remember him saying he had to go to extremes just to compete, and being in contest shape was always a struggle for him. I guess he was the ultimate gym bodybuilder type—built for size and fullness but not for the extreme definition the stage demanded.
Below is his 1991 look if I am not mistaken.

Interview and pics from his earlier pro days, pics are probably taken just after his Mr. USA win.

Evidently calves don't cause many pro contest wins.

Looking at photos of Mike’s dad, you get a different story than the one he tells. He talks about his dad like he was this powerhouse—boxing in the military, weighing 270 pounds at just 5'9", and built like a brickhouse. But in one photo, there’s a younger Sr. holding Mike as a kid, and he actually looks pretty normal—solid, but not the monster Mike describes. Later on, you see an older version of Sr., who’s gone morbidly obese with thick calves, but definitely not the '22-inch melons' Mike likes to hype up. It feels like Mike’s memory is a bit idealized, seeing his dad through a lens of pride.
Same with him saying he put on 45 pounds in a month naturally, although he was one of the most solid pros personalitywise and being a genetic freak of highest order, he was also a bit delusional imo.

The bs story about his family calf genetics was probably run to distract from his extreme gear use. BB media published so much nonsense over the decades.

Arnold gained 30 lbs (13,6 kilos) of muscle through steroids. No many bodybuilders trained harder than Arnold or had much better genetics.
So gaining 45 lbs of muscle in one month....that must have been one hell of stack of all kinds of PEDs....

He looks phenomenal in photos. Why did he not win more pro contests? Was it dieting, holding water?

More puzzling one is why he couldn't improve one bit after turning pro?
He was on cover of so many magazines when he turned pro at 24 beating some of the all time greats and his rookie pics are insanely freaky, maybe he burned out his receptors early on?!
But I don't think he was on same level with Jay Cutler or Dennis Newman ever. Lacking back and chest was a big deal to be an Olympia during those golden years of bodybuilding.
