Why take a chance when they have so many people to choose from?
Its like hiring a childminder with a history of kidnapping over someone with a clean record because the kidnaper did better on a written test.
Everyone gets Googled these days. It's standard. What will come up when you Google "Brian Wood Healy Hankins"?
You never know. There are plenty of other subjective reasons that can almost always back up any hiring/application decision:
1. He's almost 50 with an unstable job history.
2. His personal essay didn't really grab me.
3. Other applicants were more impressive.
4. He couldn't spell or punctuate.
5. He spoke rudely to the staff.
6. Others had more compelling background stories.
7. Lack of history or public/community service.
8. Thought he'd reject us for other schools based on his scores.
9. He fights with people publicly on the internet.
10. He posts personal information about his family (including pictures and video) on oddball websites.
It could go on forever.
Another application goes into the circular file, at least for anywhere that doesn't basically admit/hire anyone who applies.
