Hip replacement surgery is so cool now.  The literally make you walk right after you come out of anesthesia.

They use to do a lot of cutting but now they got the technique down.  It's not a devastating as it once was. My friend right after the operation as you said had to walk after the operation.

What I find curious is that one of the ways you wear out a joint is from over use like Yates did with heavy weight.  Then you have people that do absolutely nothing physical their whole life that need a new hip.  Just an observation and I could be wrong but you don't hear a lot about hip replacements in the running community.

Type "runners and hip replacement" into Google and see how many links pop up.

Must be a quite a few runners getting hip replacements.

Some runners are even foolish enough to resume running after having a hip replacement caused by their years of running.

Most of the links are about returning to running after hip replacement.  These people are a surgeon's ideal customers...repeat business.

Running on hard surfaces like blacktop and concrete likely contributes to excessive wear and tear.

Many adult folks only recently got into running or lifting weights and therefore have not caused the damage yet from repeated trauma over a long time.

Of course, some people like yourself, don't have issues, just like some people can smoke until their 100 and not have problems.

Plus you run on softer surfaces most of the time, right?  That's good.

We are all fine until we aren't is how it works.

You know Ironat I don’t know.It just gradually got worse and worse over about 5 years until I just couldn’t deal with the constant pain and I could barely walk by then. The X-ray showed all the cartilage was gone and it was just grinding into the joint but the other hip was in perfect shape.I thought maybe years of squatting was the culprit but that doesn’t explain why the other one was in good shape. I asked the surgeon how he thinks I did it and he just shrugs and says “I don’t explain em I just fix em” He did tell me I should have had it fixed a couple of years earlier. I told him I was hoping it would go away.Anyway I had it done at about 6 o’clock at night for some reason but I got up and walked with a walker the next morning and was walking just fine in no time.

Yates also had some sort of "make or break" procedure done on his hip early in his bodybuilding career.  I hope Dorian sticks around a long time.

You might say it doesn't involve as much blood and guts as it used to.

I lift with no problems.I work legs but no squats.I did a lot of martial arts when I was younger and I started back up on that mostly for the stretching and flexibility work. The doc’s only warning was don’t get fat and overweight. He said many use it as an excuse to not work out.So far so good for me.

And people like Prince who was wearing extremely high heels for decades = he needed two hip replacements. As he apparently was fearful of the procedure, he started taking very powerful pain killers. Resulting in his death

Dorian's hip replacement is better than Ronnie's hip replacement.

In the slide where he show the scar, it seems like there is another older scar next to it. I thought it might be just bruising.

I believe the wear comes from excessive bodyweight also and not solely from the training. Runners have to be underweight because it makes a big difference in performance. And genetic predisposition also.

You said you did martial arts.

Did you do a lot of kicking where you snap your leg like side and roundhouse kicks, especially where you make the gi snap?

Eddie Van Halen had hip issues which he said were from jumping around onstage.

I wonder if Dave had hip replacement?
