He wants someone with blind loyalty who owes him and will bend over backwards to get him out of any legal issues don't think for a second there is any kind of altruistic reason for picking Gaetz.   I am not faulting Trump but his logic is clear nothing wild about it makes perfect sense.

It's not about getting him out of legal issues, the Presidency takes care of most of that.  It's about rooting out the corruption within.

I voted for Trump. I am not complaining just amused people don't get why he is rescuing Gaetz from inquiry and putting him in charge of the Justice dept. He expects the same in return it makes perfect sense. Wife worked from home all day yesterday she goes to the office on Thurs she will be home for dinner.

James' case will get overturned on appeals.  Appellate court already heard arguments and it went very poorly for the plantiffs and their attorneys.

Bragg case will get thrown out eventually.  It would have on appeal (which should happen and Bragg fired).  He'll play politics with a stay order but it won't affect Trump

Smith case is DOA.

He really doesn't need Gaetz for any of this shit.

He could also be the sacrificial lamb. He keeps Gaetz in play, and keeps eyes off of his other picks. Then he uses Gaetz as a bargaining chip. He gets Gaetz to step aside or gives the signal that he's ok with Gaetz not getting the spot as long as they're kind to his second choice  Everyone's thinking "Whew, at least it's not Gaetz". Meanwhile, the second choice is a loyal bulldog too.

The NRA used a similar strategy for years when dealing with board elections and with government lobbying. They seat a few rough types, then they nominate more. Then they walk it back to more palatable types, that are still 90% of what they wanted.

If Gaetz wins, it's great. But even if he loses, Don might still get most of what he wants.

Should illicit drug use, buying prostitutes, even fucking some maybe 17 year old, be disqualifying? They make a big deal out of it but do they think it's very relevant? Everyone already assumes this is standard behavior anyway, and some think they *all* rape and sacrifice small children to Satan, so what's the big deal?
Trump himself isn't unfamiliar with prostitutes and he obviously doesn't care about Gaetz' indiscretions, maybe it even signals Gaetz is a virile leader.
