One alcoholic drink a day linked with reduced brain size

March 4, 2022

The research, using a dataset of more than 36,000 adults, revealed that going from one to two drinks a day was associated with changes in the brain equivalent to aging two years.

As an example, in 50-year-olds, as average drinking among individuals increases from one alcohol unit (about half a beer) a day to two units (a pint of beer or a glass of wine) there are associated changes in the brain equivalent to aging two years. Going from two to three alcohol units at the same age was like aging three and a half years.

“These findings contrast with scientific and governmental guidelines on safe drinking limits,” says Kranzler, who directs the Penn Center for Studies of Addiction. “For example, although the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism recommends that women consume an average of no more than one drink per day, recommended limits for men are twice that, an amount that exceeds the consumption level associated in the study with decreased brain volume.”

Health and cancer risks associated with low levels of alcohol consumption

January 2023

Alcohol, as classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, is a toxic, psychoactive, and dependence-producing substance and a Group 1 carcinogen that is causally linked to seven types of cancer, including oesophagus, liver, colorectal, and breast cancers.2 Alcohol consumptions is associated with 740 000 new cancer cases each year globally.

Evidence does not indicate the existence of a particular threshold at which the carcinogenic effects of alcohol start to manifest in the human body. As such, no safe amount of alcohol consumption for cancers and health can be established. Alcohol consumers should be objectively informed about the risks of cancer and other health conditions associated with alcohol consumption.

The beer, wine and liquor companies are not going to like such a warning on their products. I bet their lobbyists are working overtime to prevent it.

It goes back and forth with these "studies." All of these researchers at the universities and corporations have to keep that gravy train going.

Not really, it’s been known to be a cancer risk since the late 80s.  Blame the alcohol lobby and our elected officials for dragging their heels on this stuff.

I think it’s quite obvious that the greater consumption of alcohol, the greater risk of physical effects. This is no conspiracy theory. I don’t think it goes back and forth. No research study has ever found that alcohol is good for you (in the general sense). There may be differences in the effects of alcohol based on individual physiology , but the consensus is that it’s bad for you.

It’s more likely that big tobacco and big alcohol and big sugar has been trying to stifle these studies to keep their own gravy train moving.

I drank at least 40 beers one night in college while tripping on acid.

If it's a large amount of alcohol but many studies have shown a glass or two of wine is good for you.

Last time I checked this has been revised and the consensus is that any amount is harmful overall. The benefit, if you wish to see it it like that, is that it can help you feel jolly for a while, like the bible says, a mild therapeutic, just like some feel occasional cigars with mates can be therapeutic. Tom Platz said his whiskey after squats was a PED, highly theapeutic. Tobacco smoke is supposed to ward off evil spirits in some cultures.

I've heard buffoons say getting black out drunk once in a while helps you purge out "bad stuff" and is healthy  ;D
