It's true that in the beginning some group of virologists pretty much ruled out the lab made theory and later they opened up to the possibility. There have been leaked emails where Fauci discusses the matter with fellow experts and says he doesn't know for sure but then went with that first claim, zoonotic origin. Is it possible Fauci actually didn't know or was he deliberately obfuscating? Some claim it was likely made in Fort Detrick in the US, and there are many other theories. I think it's like the Nordstream bombing, decorated journalist Seymour Hersh claims he has information from people with direct knowledge and says Biden ordered the hit. He thinks he knows but how does he knows for sure he isn't being fed disinformation?

I'm not sure of the reason and all the reasons but I think many interests are interested in social engineering. I don't like it but all societies want to control information, sometimes there might be a benign reason like not causing panic or geopolitical crises or whatever. If the US is responsible China may demand reparations, in the extreme case it might even cause war, just as an example I just thought of. Or more likely the so called private actors like FB and YT are driven by personal ideologies. Sometimes they say the government threatens them in some way. I think Zuckerberg has been complaining about govt interference lately and says they made some mistakes like with the Hunter laptop thing and should not have gone along with it. Musk doesn't keep X censorship free and censors certain political actors and of course private individuals like Kanye West, despite being a "free speech absolutist."
