Well done on finally starting a decent thread, pepperoni nips. No, I don't think so. I only liked a few of their earlier albums. My vote goes to Slipknot. Iowa would be my favorite album of theirs. It's absolutely brutal (if true). We need Fortress to weigh in.

Yes.

Iron Maiden and Pantera also greats.

Metal is heading more towards Death Core and we are seeping guitar melodies back in style and drumming taking on a new level in being more than just keeping beat. Slaughter to Prevail is my favourite metal right now.

JFC this "Death Core" sucks balls, so fake in my ears! Though old guys always think only 'their' era was genuine and legit and good :D Perhaps there is good Death Core but I can't make myself search it out, I just put on Burzum Aske if I'm in the mood for something "heavy." Or Death for some quality death metal.

Of course many older fans think Metallica totally went to shit when they cut their hair and stopped drinking and drugging, total sellouts, me included lol. Some think the black album was already a sellout and I used to hear that only the first album was any good with no compromises. I used to think the black album was still good, although if I'm to listen to some Metallica now it's Justice for All and earlier :D 8)

I guess this will turn into a Metallica vs Maiden thread, since they are the only serious contenders.

I feel Maiden has been more consistent in the quality of their output (but also a bit more safe). Their albums after 2000 are good if you are a progressive rock fan.

Metallica took more chances with their sound but they rarely paid off. The metal community are not like Madonna fans, they are very conservative, they would never stand for their favourite band reinventing themselves too radically. I personally like Load and Reload while everyone else hates them. S&M 1 is a fantastic record and a very successful experiment. After 2003 they were either shit or embarrassingly mid. St Anger is a pile of shit but this is more due to the production, the lack of polish and the unnecessary length, not the songs. I've read the Lou reed record is shit. The other albums (Death Magnetic etc) are so mid I can hardly remember anything other than a couple of songs. I heard about two minutes from their last record and never played it again. Hetfield, now in his 60s, still goes banging on about his childhood.

I personally do not like metallica at all.  That is one metal band that I just cannot get into.  I play their stuff on guitar a fair bit and unlike many, many bands that have weaseled into me liking them by me playing their music, I absolutely still do not like them.  I play master of puppets because it's a downpicking endurance track and that's it.   Does nothing for me.

They are incredible, still play amazing, and have the longevity factor.

Saw them last year and they were awesome.

But the reality is they haven't produced anything epic since 1988.  There some decent stuff, but nothing compared to the first four albums.

Personally, I'll go with Pantera, but completely understand why Metallica is considered the greatest.

Pantera played there and produced the greatest live breakdown in music history.

Breakdown was when  DJ 181 in the crowd   stripped down and flexed .

Metallica is Thrash Metal, not Heavy Metal.

Best Heavy Metal-band is Iron Maiden.

They may be "most popular" that doesnt equal "best".

Musicianship, again, Metallica cant carry maidens road cases...

Vox, Drums, Bass, Guitars, (Kirk might be close to Dave Murray (maybe) but thats where musicianship and writing ends.

Just like Rap (many are more popular) but most have zero talent. Metallica havent put out anything good in ages...

Who under the age 50 is listening to Iron Maiden? The band has to be in their 70s by now. I grew up on the west coast and no one was into IM. They were always a weird, cartoonish band to everyone I knew growing up. And as an adult I don’t anyone listening to them. Not trying to hate, but I just never saw or knew anyone into them.

Metallica is the best of all metal bands. There is no close 2nd.

They've done nothing epic since 1988.  You can even see it in the crowd reactions at shows.

Plenty of close seconds.

Plus, they changed from metal to hard rock-ish.

Now for popularity and worldwide fame, sure.

Saw both of them at a music festival last year. Metallica put on a great show, although they played the shortest amount just shy of two hours and they were the headliner for their night. Not a maiden fan but they put on a great show, played over two hours and the singer still had his voice. Same with Judas Priest. That dude could still sing. Axl was done for and Brian Johnson was struggling.

I agree they haven't put out anything epic since 1988, but James is one of the best rhythm guitarists ever, IMO.
