its the only excercise thats done with not enough weight by beginners as opposed to too much
if you had enough weight on you wouldnt even be able to do that
Yup, you couldn't do pullups that way. When I started lifting a bit barely in my teens I instinctively kind of arched my back and pulled into my upper chest. However, not many years ago these "biomechanics experts" started saying that to work the lat properly you shouldn't arch actually so I was like, wtf have I thought about it wrong all these years?! LOL, maybe this is nerding out too much but you get this way if it's an obsessive hobby for decades

Though pulling down to your navel makes it a tricep extension combo like Flexacon said
