How do people feel about union jobs? Or careers?
« on: June 15, 2025, 04:36:37 AM »
I have a couple of buddies that swear by them, but it’s like they’re always laid off have to relocate keep moving and be away from their families. We obviously know the government paid job to any of you guys have experiences with people the benefits seem pretty good, but what’s the story does anybody have or can relate to the pros and cons? These guys are getting up there in Aegis, but it seems to me. It’s more like a dictatorship like a mafia.

If you’re working a trade it’s almost always better to be union than non-union company.  You have a lot of bullshit to deal with but at the end of the day it’s about making money and union jobs pay considerably more, most of the time.

i work in a union now, i used to hate them, my old union , was not worth a shit. the one i am in now has gotten us good raises   and benefits i have to admit the people i work with are a decent crew as well.  they have there pros and cons, but most companys  will fuck you in the ass with no union.

I just don’t understand my buddies work half the time it just seems very political. It’s like they are treated like bitches. They have to travel for work away from your families and then they just get dropped or laid off at the drop of a hat and back on unemployment again it just seems like a shit fuck

I was in a union for 33 years. I was a boiler operator and also ran the biggest ammonia plant in California. Steady work, good hours, everyone was cool, had to work all shifts. Pay raises were steady, medical slowly creeped up on us. But over all, was a great job. I now have been retired for 10 years, and the pension pays off like a slot machine every month.

And when i croak my lovely wife will get the same amount until she dies. UNION IS LOSING MONEY ON MY OLD ASS. LOLLLLLLLLL

If I were a lifetime blue collar worker I would probably want to join a union. Philosophically, I'm against them.

I was a union millwright in NJ before I went back to running my window/door business.  I made a shit ton more money with less stress in the union than what I deal with now trying to find and keep employees and my 60-70 hour work weeks.  It's hard once you're a owner/boss to go back and work for anyone.  What kills me now at age 60 is the desire to be back into the gym but I'm always so stressed out about my projects with OCD level work that I can never unplug from installing or estimating.  Staying in the union would have given me a much better life looking back, hell I could be retired.  The rate for regular journeymen is over $60 an hour.  At my age I'd be a boss at about $80 an hour with annuity, pension, and the best benefits.

People who are against unions usually have some about envy about not being in a union.

Who is going to turn down a job with mandatory raises, benefits, vacation, pension etc.

Both of my parents retired with pensions and they also get SS. They both get great pensions, plus their social security and lifetime medical coverage but they have to pay into the medical coverage. I remember growing up, we had the best medical coverage: $5.00 copay for almost everything. Yeah, for those who say they hate unions, will jump at the first opportunity to join a union, particularly if you get a great pension. Who is going to turn down a lifetime pension? Not one damn person.

Do you want a lifetime pension of 20k a year or a annual income of 200k lots of people will turn down guaranteed low paying long term benefits for higher current pay

Who is talking about 20K a year salary? I have a family member who makes over 100K working a blue collar union job. Electricians, plumbers, etc, who are unionized, make at least 75K+. Cops and fireman in NYC can easily clear over 100K+. And depending on what your contract is, that is not a bad pension, plus social security. There are tons of blue collar union jobs where people make good livings and wind up with damn good pensions. I dont know anyone who is part of a union who makes 20K a year, particularly in a skilled trade/craft. Not one.

You're going to the outliers to try and prove your point, talking about 20K a year vs. 200K a year. What about all the people in the middle who make 75 to 175K a year with pensions? Furthermore, anyone who is offered a salary of 20K is likely also not being offered a position for 200K, at the same. That's the dumbest thing ever. In what field is someone offered 20K vs. 200K? haha lol. Whatever field a person is in, the salary's are going to be somewhat similar, from one position to the next. If someone is offered 2 positions, one at 100K with no pension and one at 90K with a pension, the person would likely take the latter.  If youre going to give an example, use a better, more realistic example than 20K vs. 200K.  ??? ??? ??? ::) ::) ::)

I've been a union member (UAW) for 40 years. Has been steady pay, no insurance deductable, and a pension, plus I contribute to a 401K. For the last 15 years I have made $150k-200k a year, but it does require alot of overtime to make this annually.

I am not knocking union workers they work hard and can make good money just saying it’s hard physical labor usually which ideally I would prefer not to do

If you want to make your living doing physical labor have at it. I have no problem saying I would prefer not to do back breaking labor for a living. I realize it’s good honest money with benefits just saying I would prefer to sit at a desk in the Ac with internet access and stock options. But by all means any job that pays the bills is a a good job

"hard work" is a silly term. I made more money in the first 5 years of my own business than I had made in the 20 years prior- and it certainly wasn't hard work.

The term is a throwback to the days people thought manual labor was the only way to make a living.
