Impressive but I'm sure in hindsight he wishes he trained more sensibly.

I like the concept of black and white pics with not so perfect gym attire, depicting real training. Brian Moss is trying to do something like that but it comes across as very fake, like a rag wrapped around a thigh for no apparent reason. That Ronnie pic is great for its realism...

I wear plenty of old not so perfect t-shirts to the gym, now it's really hot here and I'm about to cut off some sleeves from old t-shirts, instead of buying some crazy expensive GASP tanks or whatever. Then again I train so late there's only about 4 or 5 Somalis and Arabs there, sometimes no one and it's a big two story gym :D

Edit: meant to post this in the Animal Pak thread but it works here also 8)

He uses random wraps and bandages as props.  What's that loose wrist bandage do? It's just to project some type of wounded warrior aura. Didn't find the thigh rag yet. Now I remember Tom Platz used to carry around an old small towel he had used as padding on the bar, he put it around his thigh sometimes as some type of amulet mental thing.

A pro bb wearing one raggedy glove in the gym. One wrist wrap for leg presses. One sloppy knee wrap for sitting on a bench.

"Remember, your bodybuilding career will last only as long as your joints hold out. Therefore, do all you can to protect them now." - Lee Haney

That was one of the first physiques I saw as an 8 year old flipping through my first magazine. Pure magic, still is. Can't quite put my finger on why that is, but whatever it is it's there. Everyone also said he was a gentleman, a class act, so that's good too. Maybe he has secrets but he's been married to the same woman all this time.

Ignoring the obvious things like his crazy lats and V Taper. Haney is the only bodybuilder I've seen hit the vacuum pose and simultaneously make his abs pop. Samir kinda could do it, but nothing like Haney. So it is naturally a very strong pose for Haney and then he adds a unique finishing touch that makes a huge difference

Same here. In fact most of my so called leisure wear are first used as just that. Hanging out and when nothing more formal is needed. Then when they start to wear down I move them to another pile with other gym clothes 😊
I don’t think I have never bought a piece of clothing just for the gym 🤔

Platz I though that his adductor rag would be just some makeshift feel good apply pressure thing for some lingering groin etc issue?

Lee Read my first BB magazines around this time. When Gaspari took three 2nds is a row.
Haney looked like straight out of a Marvel mag. But Rich was a short white dude so liked him more 😁

Haney was born to be Mr Olympia. No doubt. Dorian just advanced the look haney had and made it bigger. Have you watched haney train? Barbell rows with 65 pounds (no lie) "throw another 10 on there" he was really not the hardest trainer. For sure. Pure genetics.

But he was smart enough to realise if it was enough to build muscle, why lift heavier?

Also did quarter-rep squats with moderate weight.

He was smarter. "Stimulate don't annihilate" was his favorite saying on his TV show. If Ronnie had done the same he would have still won those Olympias and he'd be healthy and walking around instead of hobbling.

Haney put the work in when it was needed. He trained with Gaspari for a while who was known for his intensity in the gym.

In his videos he always emphasises injury prevention.

Probably the smartest training videos from any of the Mr O's.

He himself said he "drew strength" from it or something like that. He'd used that rag for his epic squat workouts so it held sentimental value and it contained positive memories. He talked a lot about his ritualized behavior and magical thinking surrounding workouts. Red pants for squats. Using an old leg extension machine for the imprinted memories on it. Leaving space between plates for the clanking sound. Smoking cigars and drinking Louis the 13th cognac as a "therapeutic" after workouts. I'm all for it, if it "works."

What makes you say that?
Ronnie had some of the best arm (bicep) and shoulder detail of any bodybuilder in history, and that is primarily the two locations that most professional bodybuilders put synthol.
His arm detail in particular makes most of the current pros look like they are, in fact the ones putting synthol in their arms, or need to diet for another 6 weeks!
