Thoughts on this:

You may have done him a favour. This was shaping up to be his greatest endeavour in decades. Much easier if someone just ends it for him.

You may have been lied to by the school (hard to imagine that is true but it is very strange/suspicious/unprofessional to disclose student information - much more likely if the student gives permission for it to be disclosed).
