I think he would have met the physical requirements for Classic class if he was in his heyday shape. How would he have looked next to today's lineup?

One of the more memorable physiques of his day because of that wasp- like waist. Now it's like 50 inches.

I only met Brian once. Briefly in 1999. He was working on a competitive comeback. He was rather “off season” as you see in the photo above. He was wearing this mesh tank top and shorts and though he looked like a big dude who lifted, you would never have guessed that upper body was there. He was pretty chubby. I knew who he was through photos so seeing him I just couldn’t believe it. Of course he got in top shape and the crazy thing was how fast it happened.

People talk about levrones bounce back genetics and they’re right. Buchanan was right up there with levrone with freak level genetics and response.

Also, he was just a genuinely nice guy when I met him.

Seems to be the consensus - that he's a very nice guy. I wonder if he's still in Australia.

Pretty accurate. Between 88 and 89 he brought up his quads and added  more size especially to his legs but lost some of the freak factor his tiny waist gave him.. It was still much smaller than a lot of the other pros. He placed low at one show, I think out of the top 6, maybe out of the top 10 and left the sport pretty bitter from what I recall. He did fairly well   in most shows, usually in the top 5 and 7 and 8th in the Olympia.  A true freak. He looked awesome.

This will piss off and bewilder some guys, but Brian's wasp waist isn't actually that aesthetic, just in my own opinion of course. It makes a man look weak, like you could snap him in half. There's a happy medium. Same with very thin hips and flat ass.
Aesthetic is somewhat subjective but there is such a thing as fairly objective measures as well, if you poll the average population.

Perhaps something like this is more "masculine" and powerful? Without looking it up, I don't recall the David statue having very thin waist either.

No homo, but perhaps judging males' physique aesthetics is somewhat homo, not sure, in that case I don't care...

Joe Weider once lamented about Sergio's waist being too small  ???

Haha I missed that one :D

And Arnold complained of Mentzer's "huge" waist.

But seriously guys, would you want a waist as small as Buchanan's in contest shape if you got all the other size he has? I wouldn't. Early Yates' waist was more aesthetic and proportionate in my opinion.

I've got a 27 inch waist at my tightest weighed all of 152-153

Richard Baldwin narcissist knows him I'm sure

Added an inch to his contest shape waist

Never understood that

I think the Greeks having such small cocks is what lead Greek women centuries ago and continuing to present day to love taking it up the ass.  Greek cocks too small to satisfy the vagina but perfect for the asshole.

Even when they had access to thier wives they just said... thanks but no thanks and kept on banging each other

Buchanon had a good upper body but his lower body would've prevented him from winning the Classic O. Bumstead also came in more shredded.
