Zod wasn’t just angry about losing a fight — he believed Superman had destroyed Krypton’s future when he incinerated the Genesis Chamber, which contained thousands of Kryptonian embryos. For Zod, this was genocide; his sole purpose was to protect and restore his people, and now that hope was gone. From his perspective, vengeance was all that remained, so he resolved to destroy humanity. Ironically, Kal-El still carried the Codex — the genetic blueprint of Kryptonian life — inside his cells, meaning he could theoretically recreate their species. But doing so would have required sacrificing Earth, a price Superman refused to pay.
Could Zod have won if he absorbed more solar energy? Possibly. Kryptonians get stronger the longer they’re under a yellow sun, and Zod had only just arrived, whereas Kal had decades to adapt. Zod was catching up fast, but time wasn’t on his side.
