Pencil-Neck Old Guy Disses the Big 5 Lifts!
« on: August 19, 2025, 06:07:03 AM »
"Lyle McDonald Goes to WAR With These 5 Barbell Lifts (Squat, Bench Press, Deadlift, OHP, and Row)"

To be honest, I've heard of his name but not familiar with him. I don't know; I watch a lot of this stuff on YouTube but I just can't take advice from people who look like that.

Not upset by it. It's the old argument that muscles respond to stimulus, and it doesn't matter where it comes from. Also that it's easier to account for form break down, and target individual muscles for failure using other exercises like hacks, leg extension, etc... He's not against the big compounds, just that other stuff works better some times.

Technically I think it was the skilled surgeon who put Ronnie in the wheelchair.

Actually it matters very much where the stimulus comes from. Isolation exercises do not build muscle. Dont believe me go to the gym and do as many leg extensions as you like. You may get a little bit sore but thats it. No growth, no increases in strength. Zero. If anything they hinder growth by sapping away your recovery ability.

Much of his argument was swapping big barbell lifts for big machine lifts. Hacks or leg press for quads, leg curls for hamstrings. Machine presses and upright row and lateral raise for BP or OHP. This was in regards to hypertrophy only, I think he's more right than wrong.

Odd how a guy who obviously never lifted a weight in his life can become a famous training guru.

And people will listen to him.

He's not the only one too.

Con-artists.

I know someone who messed up his back lifting a heavy rock in his yard. He's had numerous back surgeries and it just got worse and worse. Probably messed up his kidney's along the way because of all the pain meds he took. But he would have never had such a back problem if he never tried to lift that heavy rock.

Same goes for Ronnie. If he lifted like Jay he would still be walking around today and in better health.

Maybe. What would be his condition if he never had the surgery?

Is there anyone who had a successful back surgery?

We always hear about the bad ones but was there ever anyone who had a back surgery where they ended up better?

Its all horrible.

Phil Anselmo I believe had one of the first spinal fusion surgeries in 2005/6

He was in terrible shape before that, addicted to heroin/opioids, etc. "Mostly" sober by now and can actually tour although he doesn't move a lot on stage.

Not a really good example of back surgery success.

Try again.

Stallone had neck fusion after he was injured filming the first Expendables.

You can tell since then he cannot fully turn his neck and usually turns his whole body. Still in excellent shape

Dorian used leg extensions and they seemed to work well for him.

Of course they work the muscle fibres ..same with Leg Curls.
Infact you could get not bad wheels from the two above exercises & Hack Squats although i would put some Bulgarian split squats in there if needed.

Mohamed Makkawy built good legs with this..
