Dorian used leg extensions and they seemed to work well for him.

He used them after warming up on a stationary bike to 'pre-exhaust' the leg muscles before leg presses or smith-machine squats. At least according to one of his training programs at one point.

Personally, I don't like leg extensions as it puts a very large amount of force on a small area of cartilage under the kneecap and also on the patella tendon. Squats on the other hand distribute the forces across more of the body.

Actually it matters very much where the stimulus comes from. Isolation exercises do not build muscle. Dont believe me go to the gym and do as many leg extensions as you like. You may get a little bit sore but thats it. No growth, no increases in strength. Zero. If anything they hinder growth by sapping away your recovery ability.

IronNat appears to be taking this situation very seriously.

I can't turn my back on this topic.

I thought muscles responded to intensity.

How does your quad muscle know if its doing a leg ext or a squat?

Oh, and you cant build additional muscle you can only expand the fibres you already have

And if it was just lifting heavy why do bodybuilders have larger muscles than power lifters?

I know someone who messed up his back lifting a heavy rock in his yard. He's had numerous back surgeries and it just got worse and worse. Probably messed up his kidney's along the way because of all the pain meds he took. But he would have never had such a back problem if he never tried to lift that heavy rock.

Same goes for Ronnie. If he lifted like Jay he would still be walking around today and in better health.
Stay away from medicos as much as possible.

Odd how a guy who obviously never lifted a weight in his life can become a famous training guru.

And people will listen to him.

He's not the only one too.

Con-artists.

He started as a triathlete and works primarily with endurance athletes.

He moved on to speed skating and later power lifting.  Then trained power lifters and bodybuilders.

His Bio is on the bottom in the link.

i think Lyle was just born to be an endurance guy. Years ago, he got invited to try out for the Olympics at an advanced age. His best performances were in the long events - https://www.speedskatingnews.info/skater/lyle-mcdonald .

I was wrong. Lyle just let himself go/not aging well.

That's somewhere in the #320-340 range. The reds are ultra thin #55s, so it looks like one plate, but it's 2. i can't remember if the next plate is a #22 or #33*, but it would be in that range, and the collars were #11 for the pair.

He was in the 67.5 class or around there, so it was like a double bodyweight pull, so it wasn't horrible, but it wasn't great. I don't hold it against folks when they don't put up good numbers, as long as they don't claim to be something they're not. His bench was in the low - mid 200's I believe, squat was similar to deadlift.

There used to be a meet report for his lifting, but it's lost to time.

Edit - *They're definately the #15/33s.
