lost muscle or shrunk muscle?
« on: August 23, 2025, 04:11:26 AM »
I havent trained legs for around 3 months since doing calisthenics

Also lost a bit of upper body size
Legs down about two inches

Now, did I lose muscle or did they just shrink?

And if I lost muscle how is it I could get those two inches back with about 6 hours training?

I would rule out "losing muscle" as the muscle cells really aren't lost that fast unless trauma or disease is evident.  Most likely you just lost a little water that was contained inside the muscle giving it a deflated state.  Pumping the blood back into the area with your normal weight training brought it back.

Just guessing here in your case.

As I age I can tell if I have laid out of the gym for a week. I begin to lose my “pump”. It comes back the following week but I realize now as I’m middle aged that I need to be constantly doing some sort of exercise just to maintain, not like when I was young and could do nothing and still have muscle. I think after long layoffs you do lose some muscle tissue though, especially as you get old.

You don’t grow new muscle fibers, they just get bigger or smaller.  You start training again and your size will come back pretty quickly I imagine because of your background in bodybuilding.

Try the Primal Diet - is you're not interested in reading, try, at least, eating butter from raw milk.

You didn't lose muscle. Your muscle cells just shrunk.

Should rebound quickly with progressive overload training as long as protein needs are met.

Didn’t Illuminate explain that concept to you a couple weeks ago?

Now here you are, mirroring him. You’re almost using his exact words too.

Wouldn't even need progressive overload. Using the same weight to pump muscles over and over works as well.

I've been laid up for up to 4 weeks at a time due to surgery - appendectomy, hernias, etc. Muscles shrink and as soon as you start lifting again they blow up.

It's actually pretty miraculous.

you`re born with the same amount of muscle and fat cells, they either shrink or expand but the numbers remain the same.

I posted this 5 mins ago with on my FB. I took a couple pics about two hours ago but this piece of shit platform won’t let the pics upload.

My days of competing ended in 2019 when I won the NPC California Championships (Masters) making me the oldest to ever win that show in its history at 57. Today I have zero regrets and absolutely no desire to compete again.

That being said, I train legs about once a month in the gym. The rest of the time I’ll do rucks 2-3x week with 40-50lbs on heavy ruck days 3-5 miles at a time. But as age catches up with everyone so does the sarcopenia (loss of muscle). But doing this routine, it allows me to maintain most of my lean muscle. You can’t beat Father Time but you can sure give him hell

your body creates extra fat cells but it doesnt get rid of them after, they just lie dormant when you lose weight, hence people yo-yoing.

Fat kids always have the propensity to be fat adults even if they lose weight

As for muscle fibres they only increase in length and volume, even during puberty

This used to be correct, but today you can actually voluntarily reduce the number of fat cells in your body. One way is by undergoing cryolipolysis (CoolSculping). This was first used in 2009. Another way is by undergoing liposuction. This has been available since 1975.

When fat cells are either removed or frozen to death, they do not regenerate. However, like you said, individual cells can still expand. So, it is possible to get fat with fewer fat cells if you overeat based on your metabolism. The number of muscle cells in our bodies is constant. At this time, there is no way to voluntarily reduce skeletal muscle cells them without cutting them out which no one in their right mind would do.

Based on my personal experience, cool sculping is an excellent way to sculpt your body by ridding it of unwanted fat cells, i.e. "Love handles." Not only is this noninvasive, which liposuction is, it accomplishes what was intended. No more love handles. Yahoo!

I’ve understood/heard/read that fat cell number increases up to two years of age and that muscle cell number could increase even in puberty.

Broscience mostly though. Haven’t really looked into it.🤷‍♂️
