In the UK (and I'm sure it's similar elsewhere), after the person dies, a death certificate is issued and the death is officially registered. We have a 'tell us once' system here where you inform the government and its various departments will then close accounts and settle outstanding debts.
After that, you go through the legal process (probate) of distributing the deceased's assets in line with their wishes. This takes time, so the only thing you might need to do is ensure that your partner has immediate access to funds while this all takes place.
I had mine open a savings account in her name (I also have access) and I threw a large lump-sum in there for her to use in the event of my tragic demise. I also taught her how to access my cold wallet as that's the only thing that could be a real pain in the ass. Everything else will be distributed between her and my nephews over time.
If you're fearing some sort of Agatha Christie-esque murder mystery then you're already fucked. Don't ignore obvious personality defects and settle down with a hot nutcase.
