Paramount Skydance To Acquire Warner Brothers Discovery
« on: September 11, 2025, 01:34:50 PM »
Paramount and Warner Brothers were the last two movie studios that weren't bought by a larger company like Disney, Sony, or Comcast.

I really just view this as Oracle creating their own Netflix.

It will be interesting to see how they structure the new company and how the streaming platforms will be affected.

Of the original eight studios, Paramount and Warner Brothers were the only two that weren't acquired by larger companies.

The Big Five

Paramount Pictures – 1912

Warner Bros. – 1923

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) – 1924
Now owned by Amazon

20th Century-Fox – 1935
Now owned by Disney

RKO Radio Pictures – 1928
Out of business.  Studios now part of Paramount.

The Little Three

Universal Pictures – 1912
Now owned by Comcast

Columbia Pictures – 1918
Now owned by Sony

United Artists (UA) – 1919
Merged with MGM - Now owned by Amazon

The whole cable industry along with broadcast TV is going to shit right now.  Cord cutting is a very real phenomenon.  Very few people under the age of fifty still have cable and the ratings of cable channels are abysmal.  Broadcast TV is in the same situation.

Broadcast television has already died.

America is the only country in the world that allows televised commercials for pharmaceuticals, so all the biggest advertisers are drug companies.

Both cable and broadcast television are being propped up by drug companies.

Streaming by far has taken over everything.  When Netflix started streaming, the whole industry changed including movies.  Bing watching tv series on DVD was a precursor to streaming and Netflix even described TV on DVD as the fourth network.
I stopped ordering DVD's in the mail when Netflix started streaming and I seems like everyone else did too.  When I finally tried to order a DVD in the mail, they had already canceled that service.  I had no idea.

Youtube is tops in streaming ratings.

If this merger goes through, it will reshape the entire industry especially for those working in it.  It also concentrates power to David Ellison, Larry Ellison's son.

David Zaslav, Warner Brothers CEO has a mixed record in terms of performance.

Producer Patrick is an industry insider:

Same here.  I run ESPN in my office and thats about it.  I will watch maybe 60 - 90 mins of tv at night before shutting down to read.  I used to love survivor...but that got so damn fucking old.  Especially when the big controversy about the host saying "come on in guys" and the trans community (or whatever group) said it offended them.

I rarely watch any of the UFC PPV.  Besides not wanting to stay up until almost 11pm, I got tired of the "I am a warrior in the cage.  I would fight to the death"...and then you get the dancing around BS.

I have Netflix (not sure why anymore), YoutubeTV (for my office), and Amazon (just because I have prime account).  Fuck all of the streaming services.  You can find all their 'exclusive' content online.

Exactly.

Paramount is making an offer for the entire company including the cable networks and CNN.

That's correct.
