Recall reading at some point (unsure of its veracity) that the distribution for Asian Iq's is more tightly clustered around the median, whereas for whites it extends further in both directions, so there is more with very high Iq's from where these sort of breakthroughs often originate and grow

A cultural environment based on private enterprise, encouraging risk taking and innovation also presumably plays a role as well
