Agreed. We called it "boomer rock" when younger, acceptable heavy rock for my seniors. Kind of what Metallica became later on. Heavy metal should be a bit "dangerous" and not completely acceptable I thought Almost hate hearing the usual AC/DC classics at the gym. I think the album Razor's Edge had a couple of darker tracks I liked a bit but you never hear those on the "radio"...

scottish band from back then - jesus and mary chain. earlier stuff shat on the later stuff from a great height and although massive fame might have eluded them by some standards they arguably were one of the biggest influences on the shoegaze era. more recent scottish band - not quite top 40 - peatbog faeries from the hebrides (skye iirc, my family are from lewis a generation or two back on both sides)
