Thought there was a golf thread
« on: October 25, 2025, 09:02:58 AM »
I’m not a big golfer but I enjoy getting out there and yucking it up with the dudes. On a golf trip now, playing Pebble Beach today and I will tell you this is about the most awesome sight I’ve ever seen as far as a golf courses go. Spyglass was yesterday, fucking deer on the fairway and 20’ waves crashing on the cliffs. Absolutely wild.

There is 1.5.

But the 1 has not been fulfilling his Y posting duties.

Shot a 106 at Pebble yesterday which brought my index down to 27.9 so that’s good. Lost three balls, one on 6, 8 and then 18 I went into some dude who evidently owns all the cell towers in Chinas yard. Caddy told me to just drop. If I’d have been home I would have walked the three feet into his yard and grabbed it. Course was absolutely beautiful. Central California is pretty cool looking.

I carried my own bag, I had a cart. The dudes I was with got two caddies so I kind of used the one that rode with us. I tipped him out at the end, but yeah, I carried my own bag and all.

Played at a pretty prestigious course once where caddies were mandatory.  Played the worst round I ever played, just didn't like having them around.  They did nothing wrong, but it just wasn't my thing.

I play like shit, but I play fast and don’t get a shitty attitude. No reason to get mad. You’re outside, walking in the sun, talking about pussy etc. and having some beers. No reason to be upset.

I think Pebble was $725 or something. Spyglass a bit cheaper. To be honest I threw everything on the room and paid at the end. On trips like this I tend not to look at the receipt and then just check my Amex statement. Like taking a trip to The Greenbrier or something, you just know that the weekend costs you about “X” dollars and as long as it’s within those parameters you just go with it.

I'm much closer to Pinehurst and friends and cousins are planning a golf trip there.

I could google it, but that’s NC right? I’d play, let me know if you need an extra.

So I played today, second time since Pebble but it was a week later so the last time a swung a club was 11/1. Anyway, I usually get tired and lose interest about hole 12-13 and it happened today. My question is, is golf similar to many sports where you have to “condition” yourself to play? I’m in good shape and have good cardio, but I get tired playing and can watch my game get shittier. Had two pars and still shot a 118. Lost three balls, and shot an 8 on six par 4’s. Still had fun though.

Yes, especially if you walk.
The worse player you are the more taxing it is since you are hitting the ball more and chasing your bad shots.
Most 18 hole rounds take 4-5 hours so the mental aspect is also fatiguing.
Courses are 6500-7000+ yards but you probably walk and extra 2000-3000 yards if you are a bad golfer.

Work on your short game.  Wedge, chipping, putting.
Make sure your grip is solid and your alignment is correct.
Then go to the range a few times a week and hit balls with irons, not just the driver.
To be good you should practice more than play.
Take lessons.

If you don't mind being awful then forget doing the above.
Even if you become pretty good the game will still drive you crazy.
Best advices is to give it up and do something else.

I’ll probably start hitting the driving range once a week now that the weather is good. Had some great shots, hit four drives perfect, outdrove everyone 280-300 yards. Then, I’d follow up a beautiful drive with whacking it into a sand trap and taking two shots to get out. Not angry, like I said, it’s fun to do, but my back gets taxed playing more than nine holes.

Golf and bowling both play havoc on the back.
Many pros have serious back problems.

Pros make bad shots too but they have the short game to make those pars and avoid double and triple bogeys.

Keys to good golf is the fundamentals:
Solid consistent grip!!!!
Proper alignment!!!!
At the range hit balls with all clubs, not just driver.  Don't just hit drivers.
Buy a bucket of balls, a large bucket.  Divide the balls up and hit 5-8 balls with each club, starting with hitting half wedges, then full wedge, 9,8,7,6,5, etc ending with the driver.
Work on the short game a lot!!!

Spend some money on lessons.
If you can spend $1,000 playing one round then spend a few hundred on lessons.
The pros take lessons all the time.

However, like I said, if being awful is ok, then don't bother.  It's ok too, seriously.

I was a 2 handicap 30+years ago.
