Best bed suggestions.
« on: November 25, 2025, 10:44:53 AM »
And before any of you animals say something like “your moms” I’m being serious. There’s a White man talking here!

Anyway, if money wasn’t an issue, what would be the most comfortable bed for a 6’4 middle aged dude with back issues? My wife recommended a sleep number, but I don’t have any experience with them. I like the Disney Cruise mattresses but I’m not sure if those are great because I’m on vacation and less stress. Also, is there something wider than a King bed? California king is a bit longer but I’m looking for something that was maybe a hair wider. And I’m not trying to turn a California king sideways because it’s too short the other way. Palumboism, you usually are “in the know” about things, any ideas on one of your consumer products list? Any getbiggers have first hand experience? Thanks.

Your mom loved my bed......(but I digress)

Fuck sleep number.  I have one...regret it.  Best ones I have ever slept on was one from a hotel (not with your mom) and it was some $600 one.  I have slept on a $9000 mattress and it was the shit.  I would never spend that much on something like that though

Wes has slept on grass, stone, iron, and even on wood on the ark....he may have better insight

Fellow White guy checking in with some sage advice.

My lower back is always being a faggot so I treated myself to a super-thick memory foam mattress-topper and pillow. I think it was around £260 total but, holy fuck, it's so good. Combined with my down duvet, I'm in heaven. When I'm home alone, there's no better feeling in the world than blasting myself with a hair dryer under the duvet while trolling the YouTube comments sections all morning.

I'm a fan of super firm mattresses. Every once and a while, I'll watch a Japanese home design show where they'll show the hard platform beds and the thin futon mattresses, and I'll think "I can get behind this idea". Sadly, I doubt you could get most women to go for it.

On the cruise ship thing, it might be like good hotels. Decent mattresses that gets tossed way before the lifespan is up. Also, lots of preventive maintenance.

A few years ago I went pretty deep down the mattress rabbit hole. The main things I learned were that everyone’s body is different, and you truly can’t tell how a mattress will feel after a full night from just lying on it for 10 minutes in a store. Hotel mattresses can be a decent test bed, but most big brands use completely different model names for the hospitality industry, so you’ll have to do some sleuthing.

In the end, memory foam works great for a lot of people, but I’m still a traditional spring-coil guy. What surprised me most is that I found a local craftsman who builds high quality coil mattresses by hand. (He actually repurposes the coils from old mattresses) His price was only a few hundred bucks more than the luxury name brand stuff you see in the big box stores. If you’re open to it, just Google something like “custom mattress builder” and your city. A lot of these guys already do odd sizes for boats, RVs, antique beds, etc., so making a normal or California king for a bedroom is no problem for them. Highly recommend going that route if you want something that’s built well and will last 15 years.

A mildly stiff matress is better to my lower back, but ruins my shoulders. I prefer a soft one. It's one of those things you will have to try. Expensive matresses are not necessarily better for your issues. Average priced ones have very good quality.

I thought I would, but really like the mattress. Fairly cheap also, $700 for queen size and pillows.

Serta iComfort cool gel for me.  Regular foam mattresses and mattress toppers just retain body heat which I hate.

Stearns and Fosters (sp) has some good ones.  But I like Serta.  The Purple mattresses have mixed reviews.  It would be great if they made a topper to try it out first so to speak, but I don't think they do.

Whatever you pick, if it is a foam one make sure you get the extended warranty.  Because no matter what you think or are told, foam breaks down over time.  I paid $90 for a ten year warranty.  At 7 years, I was noticing an indention on my side of the bed and when I went out and mentioned it to the store I bought it from they sent an associated out with a level and ruler who measured it and before the week was out I had a brand new mattress.  And I paid the $90 for the extended warranty on this one as well.

I felt like I got too fussy with mattresses and mattress toppers and even an adjustable bed. I was trying something different every few months. In the end I took my really old (but sparsely used) mattress that was now in my mums spare room as I never had any issues with it back in day.

Just a plain old firm mattress, no thrills. Took a while to adjust the firmness, but it's been great.

You may want to pay attention to my conclusions on the matter, although in all likelihood you won't

Anyway here goes

Beds and mattress industry are scams, a completely horizontal and flat surface is very far from ergonomically optimized for the human body mechanics, nor for comfort. It's just capitalism, cheap to manufacture.

Sleeping on your back is obviously best for spinal alignment and avoiding unnecessary face fold deepening. Big flat horizontal surfaces are very awkward for that, that's why people end up assuming side sleep positions in Beds which crease their faces and torque their spines. Ever notice that it's much more comfortable falling asleep on your back while in a sofa rather than a bed? Because almost everything is better designed than a fucking bed for sleeping ergonomically sound. At least in a sofa you generally have your hips slightly flexed while on your back because of the feet being on arm rests or shit like that. It also locks you into a more secured position rather than being a worm on a big flat horizontal surface. Now surely sofas aren't the best solution, but definitely they are better than fucking Beds

In conclusion, Beds are fucking shit, huge waste of space and money, they aren't even good for fucking, for that they are not stable enough and too prone to creaking or shifting. For fucking you should put a mattress directly on the floor for max stability and no creaking or shifting noises

A dentists chair is probably a lot better than a  bed for the optimal ergonomic sleep

Ok I get your opinion but you offered no solution or suggestions, unless you’re being serious about the dentist chair.
