The interesting question is if Yates never pursued bodybuilding how would Levrone & Wheeler do against Haney?

ND as you know, Lee Haney raised Levrone’s arm after he was announced the overall winner of the 1991 Nationals.   Shortly afterwards, Haney said that Levrone was the future of the sport.

There it is.  I remember when that pic was in the magazine. That was about 6 weeks after the 1991 Mr Olympia.

I believe: the threat of Yates, and the potential of Levrone, were factored into Haney’s decision to retire.

Haney was just at the cusp of the high dose GH plus insulin plus high test revolution.
If he'd had a madman like Chad circa 95-00 advising him for 93 he could have added considerable muscle I think. The products were there but like the GH still wasn't used at optimal amounts, very expensive too. Then the Genotropin started flowing in Europe and guys like Yates took advantage.

Haney was a magical physique to me as a kid. Down to his skin texture, he projected uniquely.

I remember him specifically saying there were places he was not willing to go, and I believe it was determined at the time he was referring to insulin.  So this all makes sense.

This may, or may not be true....

Yates said in an interview that he didn’t use insulin until 1997 (his final year)

In 1997 he was about 20lbs heavier than he was in 1996.

It’s just unfortunate that Yates tore his tricep during the prep for the 1997 Olympia.

Ronnie Coleman said that Yates would’ve won in 1998 if Yates had competed. But seriously, Yates had damage to his left bicep and to his left tricep. Dorian probably would’ve had a significant injury heading into the 1998 show (torn lat or a torn pec).

Yates was smart to step away when he did.

Haney was smart which is why he is still healthy and looks good today. Yates and Coleman not so much.

Let´s not forget people like Haney & Dorian competed against a field of top Bodybuilders, Arnold won at least one Olympia because no one else was present! or it was just a few people

In all fairness Bhanky competed with just one person in the line up

Not his fault no one showed up

I’m pretty sure Haney meant G4P and not insulin

The effective insulin use really only began in like 94 with Milos. I think he was just giving an excuse as to why not go on, "the sport's just got crazy!" I think he made the perfect choice on when to retire. Insulin btw would have been the least deleterious part of a stack. Yates blamed it for his waist in 97 though but I don't know what he did exactly. Ronnie's waist got way out of control and he used insulin for several years, but getbiggers now look back and admire him despite the gut.
