PROVIDENCE, R.I. —
A shooting on the campus of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, left two people dead and eight others in critical but stable condition Saturday as students gathered for final exams.

The shooting happened just after 4 p.m. at the Barus & Holley building, which houses the School of Engineering and the Physics Department.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley confirmed that two people died and eight others were in critical but stable condition at local hospitals; however he did not indicate if the victims are students or staff members.

"We do not have a shooter in custody at this time. There is a shelter in place in effect for the greater Brown University area," Smiley said.
