I respectfully disagree Europe relies heavily on US and NATO for its defence. Whilst closing or protecting its markets to trade. They have allowed the US to carry the financial defence burden for decades of NATO whilst they under funded theirs, basically overpaying their politicians and turning their own countries into welfare states. At the same time the US kept their spend high by comparison, Australia is the same. They are freeloaders. The relationships will survive, the dependence is still there, Trump is just doing a reset and very crudely he's more of an economic gangster than a politician. US debt is also huge but at least they have funded their defence they have every right to want to be paid for that position of strength that the whole coalition leans on.
