And who tries to collect a ransom in today's times?   It has to be all but impossible.  You can't do it in person.  Any digital or bank exchange is going to be monitored and traced.  Collecting money at this point is the best way to get caught.

Who kidnaps a senior citizen, that is in her last days, for a ransom? I’m sure Lurker is right that she is gone, and these geniuses didn’t realize an elderly person isn’t that best choice to keep as a long term hostage.

It’s likely it’s someone that had a connection to her thinking this was going to be quick and easy, snatching a frail old woman. At this point something went wrong with their plan.

I read that TMZ had someone contact them saying they would reveal the kidnapper for one single bitcoin. Lurker, it isn't possible to collect bitcoin anonymously? I thought it was still possible.

I don't think so.  Remember about 10 years ago the bitcoin heist?  They tracked that.  And you know they only implemented more security protocols afterwards.    Maybe they can.  I am not overly familiar with crypto anyway.

So the 2 of them can’t leave the kitchen because the dinner is so elaborate? No family meal is that labor intensive. I feel the family is involved in her disappearance some way. They’re multi millionaires…yet they have her pay for a ride to their house? Makes no sense. Or one of them couldn’t pick her up? Seems almost like having her fetch an uber then driving her home would give them an alibi.

Yeah I don't know. Recently I heard the Mossad is recruiting ordinary Iranians to become spies in Iran and paying them in bitcoin, so you'd think it would have to be hard to track since spies get the noose.

I remembered this case from my part of the world:

Tom Hagen (born 14. April 1950) is a Norwegian businessman.[1] In 1992, he co-founded Elkraft AS, an electric company. Hagen works in property development. The financial magazine Kapital lists him as Norway's 172nd richest person.[2]

His wife, Anne-Elisabeth Falkevik Hagen, was supposedly kidnapped on 31 October 2018 and has not been seen since. The suspected kidnappers demanded a nine million euro ransom paid in the cryptocurrency Monero.[3] In June 2019, Norwegian police said that they could not rule out that the alleged abduction had simply been a cover for her death.

On 28 April 2020, he was arrested and charged with murder, or complicity to murder his wife. However, he was released shortly after he was arrested, though he was still a suspect until 18 October 2024, when the charges were dismissed due to lack of evidence.

New details include:

the kidnapper or kidnappers used bitcoin to communicate with police through coded messages;

a VPN was used to obscure whereabouts;

another cryptocurrency, dash, was used to obscure the money trail;

and the people or persons behind the plot used a stolen identity to set up accounts on cryptocurrency exchanges Binance, Huobi and KuCoin.

Authorities believe complex and advanced knowledge of cryptocurrency and related fields such as the dark web are key to the case, according to VG. They are hoping that publicising the details will allow outside experts to help them crack it.

Family doesn't pay but:

Tom Hagen decides to pay 1.3 million Euros in crypto currency. He receives nothing in return.
