Mariah tell a few stories about her brother.

One where he's supposed to be baby sitting her on a Friday night and goes out with his friends and leaves her alone.  Apparently there was a scary episode of 20/20 on about child abduction and she got scared when some neighbor kids started to throw rocks at the window.  It basically sounded like a nothing burger, but at six she was scared. 

The second story was her brother wanted to use the car and their mom wouldn't let him, so he pushed their mom against the wall and took the car.  Mariah ended up calling a neighbor for help and they called the police.  Not a great move by her brother, but he made peace with their mom the next day.  Again another nothing burger.

The last story has the three of them driving to the beach with a friend of her brother.  The friend has a comb in his pocket and on the drive to the beach he uses it to comb Mariah's hair.  They didn't say a word to each other while he was doing it.  Mariah never felt her mom took proper care of her hair and for some odd reason that even was a pivotal moment and lead to a life long obsession with her hair.  It's important to note that up until that point Mariah never felt pretty, she always felt like an ugly duckling.

Growing up Marilyn Monroe was Mariah's idol and you see it in her work.  She want to be like Marilyn where the look is as important as the sound.

Mariah was twelve at the time and happy to see her sister. 

On one visit, Alison offered twelve year old Mariah cocaine, which Mariah declined.

At the time her sister lived with a pimp named John and two other women, one 17 and the other 27.  One day her sister calls up and says she and John will be over to pick up Mariah.  When he shows up her sister isn't with him and John has a gun resting on his leg.  John takes Mariah to a house where a group of men are gambling and then to a drive in movie.  At the movie, John put his arm around Mariah and kisses her.  Another car drives up and the driver stares at the situation, causing John to leave and take Mariah home to her mothers.  Mariah never mentiones the incident to anyone.

The reason Christmas is special to her is her brother and sister lived in New York city and would seldom come out to Long Island to visit her and her mother except at Christmas.  Her mother was very festive a Christmas time with Carols and Advent Calendars.  There would usually be a blow up between her brother, sister, and their mom.  Mariah vowed every year she wouldn't let her brother and sister ruin Christmas.  As a result Christmas and Christmas Carols became very important to her.  In addition, she makes a shit ton of money every year from that song that's the number one Christmas song every year.  In addition to being the number one song of any type in December last year. 

O Holy night is a must a Christmas as well.

The Glitter movie was a flop and unfortunately her first album with Virgin was a soundtrack to the movie.  They were paying her $25 million per album for four albums and the Glitter album only sold 3 million copies.  The first single Lover Boy only made it to number 2, which is respectable, but the expected multiple number one singles from this album.  The female executive who signed the deal with Mariah was fired and two other male executives replaced her.  When they met with Mariah, they wanted to renegotiate and she's said no dice, so they just canceled the whole contract. 

Mariah had no problem signing another contract with Universal Records, but it was no where near as lucrative and she only stayed with them for one album.  After that she signed with Island Def Jams.  Def Jams was started in Rick Ruben's dorm room and launched Run DMC.  She really didn't understand the tiers of record labels.  Sony is like Mercedes compared to Island Def Jams which is like Kia.

In her early teens Mariah would go with her mother to restaurants with live music and sing with professional musicians.  Often on week nights until late at night. 

On the weekend professional musicans would come over to the house and Mariah would sing Jazz songs by Ella Fitzgreald and Billie Holiday.  The musicians would treat her as an equal because musically see was.

She found paid gigs with what she called Waynes world types on Long Island and her brother found gigs for her with aspiring Hip Hop artists in NYC.  Her Junior and Senior year she would drive into NYC until late at night recording often missing the first couple of classes the next day.  Giving her the nickname Mirage because she missed so much school.

Immediately after graduating high school Mariah moved into New York City and shared an apartment with three other young women including the women standing behind her in this picture.  The women behind her was her brothers girl friend at the time.  He was 27 years old. 

Mariah was so poor when she moved to the city, she only had one pair of shoes with a hole in them.  She would live off a dollar a day and would decide if she wanted to eat or ride the subway. 

Her brother bought her a pair of high tops to replace the shoes with the hole in the sole.  He also got her connected to Ben Margulies who was in a band with him.  Ben had a small studio and recorded her demo tape, which her brother paid for.  Ben had Mariah sign a contract affecting her first four albums and she didn't fight it. 

The Lyrics to the song make it happen are in reference to this time in her life.

Her first major singing job was as backup singer to Brenda K Starr who had a hit "I Still Believe".

Brenda invited Mariah to an industry party and gave her demo tape to Tommy Mottola the head of Columbia records.  Tommy immediately went downstairs to his car a listened to it and within a week he had Mariah signed to a six album record deal.  She was just 19 years old at the time.
