If a former competitive lifter returns to training after a decade-long break, does their previous years of heavy lifting genuinely give them a faster comeback, or is it just psychological confidence? What does the science say about neural adaptations versus actual muscle fiber retention after such a long hiatus?

"Faster comeback"? How can a non-competitive athlete make a comeback? I'm not too sure what the question is :D If we're talking about "muscle memory" then of course it's still there. I'm nearly 50 and I've yo-yo'ed a lot due to getting sick repeatedly these past years and it comes back very fast. Just now I did one set of wrist curls after getting out of hospital and there's already a big difference 3 days later. :D I had no veins and then 3 days later nurse says your veins are so big, but that's just hydration and such but I think the one set caused them to come out more.

Pancreatitis. Wrist curls was the only thing I had the energy to do, at home. Too weak to even stand for too long.

This is my workout, to open up my alveoli:

Narcy,I have made so many comebacks from square one I could write a book about it.

Muscle memory is real if you`re consistant, work hard, and eat right.

It doesn't take nearly as long to get it back either.

Milos claimed he saw Flex Wheeler look untrained 3 weeks out to contest shape some year he had to back out of the shlw due to acute kidney problems. Said Mustafa Mohammed came to him "fat" three weeks out but made it.
A pro coming back you could almost literally see them change by the hour. Stretching the balloon.

I once drank for 7 rears straight when my mom died of Cancer at 49.............went back to the gym which was like my sanctuarary......no one wanted to train with me.......I was benching  95 pounds for 1 hard set of 8 shaky Hankinslike reps....I was pissed at myself, and at my friends, so I took three 5 mgs. of CIBA D-Bol a day only, and trained my balls off..... in 6 months I was benching double bodyweight and people were asking me to train with them to get them in shape to enter the Mr. Baystate contest.......I trained those mutherfuckers into the fucking ground 6 days a week and I looked great doing it after looking like a wino not long before.

I was the dog Katz was talking about............muscle memory is real !!

I want to clarify for Van that Wes was raised Catholic and that the Katz reference excludes being a "jew boy".
