Trump donors buy CNN
« on: September 22, 2026, 04:59:20 PM »
The core facts in that Benny Johnson post check out as of today.
Paramount Skydance, run by David Ellison and backed by his father Larry Ellison, is acquiring Warner Bros. Discovery. That deal includes CNN. The last major obstacle—a lawsuit from 12 Democratic state attorneys general led by California AG Rob Bonta—was settled yesterday (September 21). Paramount now expects the transaction to close in about two weeks, around early October.
Larry Ellison has given substantial support to Trump-aligned efforts, including a reported $45 million contribution to a nonprofit backing the 2024 campaign plus additional later giving. Trump has publicly called both Ellisons friends and supporters. Paramount has denied making any explicit promise to overhaul CNN in exchange for merger approval.
CNN staffers have described the mood internally as grim, anxious, and “horrific” in reporting from multiple outlets over the past several months, citing uncertainty about jobs and the changes already made at CBS News under Bari Weiss. “Funeral” is colorful language, but it tracks with the reported atmosphere.
The 12 attorneys general dropped their antitrust case after Paramount agreed to several conditions: a multi-year minimum number of theatrical releases, extra spending on U.S. film production, a fund for affected workers, and a monitoring board meant to protect editorial independence at both CNN and CBS News. Bonta said the settlement is not an endorsement of the merger itself.
The ownership change is happening. Claims that it will “destroy” CNN or that journalists are in full panic are opinion and hype layered on top of those facts. David Ellison has publicly pledged to keep CNN editorially independent and to aim at a broad center audience. Whether the network actually shifts, and how much it resembles the CBS News changes, remains to be seen once the deal closes.

Foreign equities (mostly middle eastern sovereign funds) will own 49.5% of nonvoting stock. They will own that percentage of the parent company of CNN, CBS, HBO etc.

I will believe this when and if it happens. You believe it because you hope it happens.

I don’t think it’s good when news media is owned and controlled by oligarchs with political motivations

It is a bad thing. But it has been that way since the days of railroad tycoons and newspapers.

You're complaining about billionaires when it's billionaires that makes it possible for the technology we have today. Some billionaires use their wealth for evil, I get that but the majority don't. Ted Turner is a Democrat but when he started CNN it was a reputable and reliable source for news. Today it rivals The Onion as does MS Now and most of the left wing pundits. When Soros bought up some 225 radio stations the left was elated. How did you feel about that?

Why the “But”?  You make it sound like you don’t think better things are possible.

Exactly.

Check out who owns the AP to really blow your mind.

I think it’s bad no matter who does it and whether or not the owner’s political leanings align with my own.  Not that George Soros or Ted Turner’s political beliefs have anything in common with my own.

In fact, we have a Democrat to thank for the current miserable state of our news media.  Bill Clinton signed the 1996 Telecommunications Act, which lifted the cap on how many broadcast & radio stations a single owner could have.  Soros was only able to buy all those radio stations because of that law.

I was aware the AP was independent or not owned by a corporation and is not for profit.  I did have to read up on the details after you posted this, and it's good to see the CEO can't be pinned down to bias or any party.

And I'm not disagreeing with the sentiment of what you said, I just don't see how we get around private ownership / bias, etc.

I am not sure if better things are possible. Or maybe we are talking about different things. I don't want censorship of media just because they are for profit or run by people I disagree with.
