Was Lance Dreher really Top 3 Olympia material?

Lately Ive been seeing on social media videos that Lance Dreher (now 71) claims he placed dead last at both Olympias 82' and 83' due to political friction with the Weiders (the IFBB), and According to Dreher himself, Joe Weider heavily pressured him to move to California to train, but he refused due to poor contract, lack of money $200.00 /weekly (this was 44 years ago) plus a place to stay, food, supps seminars and magazines publicity...

He says he was unfairly penalized because he did a "NABBA appearance for a nonprofit Sharity organization", where he later found decent success and won the Pro Mr. Universe title in 1986 but no money and no worldwide exposure  :'(


He also claims his arms were 23.5 inches at his peak ...

Chris Dickerson won in 1982.  Make of that what you will. 

For my part, I think that Dreher is perhaps less balanced than Dickerson, but not obviously worse.  Goes to show how subjective the sport can be, I guess...

Top 3 in 1983 would mean he would beat Lee Haney! Ummm..............NO!!

He's one of those guys who looked great by himself and people wonder how he could lose. Then he gets compared directly to others and then you can nitpick. Sergio Oliva was like that too.

Mike Matarazzo had an awesome physique that was visually impressive. Extremely impressive. But the IFBB judges would find too many weaknesses.

Lance Dreher was in the same boat as Matarazzo. Tremendous gym physique. But the IFBB judges would always find too many flaws.

How tall was he? I mean, to have 23-inch arms with relatively small waist is impossible specially under 250 lbs .

Not really, he's somewhat viral now on tiktok/Instagram ...

Most people agreeing with him commenting he wasn't allowed to win Olympia due to politics...he placed dead last at 1982 and 83' being the most impressive in the entire lineup ...

Seems top six is a more realistic scenario though

When joswift mentioned it I see a hint of dwarfish features in the side triceps above. I just looked at some comparisons on YT and I definitely see it, it's slight but there :D

None of this matters, just the rantings of an old man telling inflated glory day stories.

Haney in 1984 was head and shoulders above everyone, clear cut.  He started a new era, all the old dudes were soon out.  Here he is in 1983 and he was way better in 1984
