Questions for Bob - IFBB Doping Rules
« on: May 19, 2006, 09:01:10 AM »
I was curious and wanted to see what the IFBB rules were with respect to doping (using performance enhancing drugs).  The IFBB rules are in line with the rules of the WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency). The IFBB document references the WADA prohibited substance list as the standard for the IFBB and associated organizations:

"These Rules incorporate the Prohibited List which is published and revised by WADA as described in Article 4.1 of the Code. The IFBB and each Affiliated Federation shall ensure that the Prohibited List in force, as published at the WADA website www.wada-ama.org, is made available to its Athletes and other Members. Unless provided otherwise in the Prohibited List and/or a revision, the Prohibited List and revisions shall go into effect under these Rules three months after publication of the Prohibited List by WADA without requiring any further action by the IFBB or its Affiliated Federations."

Here's the list...

Here's the IFBB Rules regarding doping..

So here are my questions:
1) Is this enforced at all?
2) Does this also apply to the NPC since it is an affliated organization?
3) If these rules where applied, wouldn't all athletes be natural athletes?
4) Do you think that the IFBB and NPC competitors have any idea that these rules exist?

I know this is a delicate set of questions.

We all know the actual truth. I have written and emailed about this issue for years now...and give up.
I just enjoy the shows and bodybuilding.

Heres the deal..

Yes, it is enforced per a drug test being given...

Yes, it applies to the NPC, in drug tested shows...

If the rules were applied, any athlete testing positive would be subject to the disciplinary action outlined in the IFBB rules.

Yes, they know they exist.

Bob,

Thanks for the reply.  I've talked to some NPC folks and they seem oblivious to the rules.  I actually was shocked at how stringent the rules are.  By what I see in the rules, if you abide by the rules you have to be natural.  So, I guess that leaves us with some very obvious conclusions.  No need to bother folks with those -- it seems rather obvious.

Thanks for your candor and I understand the need to be terse.

Bye the way, you've done one hell of a job on the last two BB Shows (you and the rest of the bodybuilding.com folks).

Way to give props there,  Pro masters champ.
I liked the NPC format where we have a drug tested nationals (Team Universe) and the reg national events.
To me the ideal is having a choice and doing what is best for each individual, etc.
The Feds don't seem to agree with this however...go figure :o

yeah...you said it...IF the rules were applied. In all fairness, however, you answered that the only way that you could have really. :-\

Bob, I know that the IFBB tests for diuretics...at least at the MR. OLYMPIA...but are there any other drugs that are tested for?
