True, but they aren't mature or smart enough to make decisions that have long-ranging impact until they are much older. Kids make decisions with short term gratification in mind. I have a devil of a time getting my teenagers to think about how their decisions today might affect them 1 year from now (or longer). Parents need to make most of the kids' major decisions for them early on, like diet, religion, sports, music, etc. As the kids get older and more mature, parents can provide various options and let the kids choice from those options. At least that's the way it's done in my house.
