The Mr. Olympia, REAL or FIXED?
« on: June 11, 2006, 09:33:23 AM »
As I was finishing that last grueling rep with a 25 lb dumbbell this morning at the iron asylum, many thoughts crossed my mind, thoughts that although meaningless to many, hold so much value for fans of this sport like myself. I'm not a competitor, I'm not a promoter and I'm not judge, I am but a mere fan of this sport that would like to hear your responses to what I consider a phenomenon that has slowly morphed this industry to something which it wasn't many years ago.

Throughout the many years that the Mr. Olympia has graced our eyes, it never fails to make me wonder that maybe, behind the scenes, the Weider boys and their new cronies in charge of sales have stuck to some sort of hidden agenda.  Many of you here have mentioned that whenever an actual Mr. Olympia champion, the likes of Ronnie, is present that no one else has a chance, because it's not common practice for a reigning champion to be dethrowned.  Why is that?  We don't need to be a bunch of judges sitting in little booths across from the stage to be able to say that many times the reigning champ lacks many things that the underdog has, so what gives?

To add to that, how many times will we sit around and allow for gift placings to be handed down to the likes of guys like Gunter, who although a hell of a nice guy to everyone, doesn't have the frame or overall asthetics to save his life in an amateur contest?  Now, Im not a supporter of any particular Pro, but I do find that a many times throughout the last few years, the Mr. Olympia contest seemed fixed, because you can't honestly tell me that Ronnie truly beat out guys like Cutler circa 2001/2002 or even a guy like Dexter who comes in looking close to perfect from head to toe.  Is the Mr. Olympia a size contest or is it a bodybuilding contest?

Sure, with today's modern supplementation and new workout techniques, we have progressed to a point where our athletes are bigger and stronger than before, but symmetry must play a role in all this and although I do think that Ronnie Coleman did deserve to be a champion years back, I do find that today the man is a little too deformed to do the sport any justice.  I was there a few years back when Ronnie Coleman visited the Jay Leno show and to say that people were amazed at what they saw would be ridiculous.  People weren't amazed, peopled were disgusted.  I say this with no disrespect to Ronnie, but people looked at him more in the way that you would look at a caged animal.  They weren't in awe of his amazing proportions, they were quite frankly scared.  Ronnie looked very impressive and even appealing to the eye back in 98 or so, before resorting to extreme measures and I hope he can find it in himself to do the sport and his body justice by reverting to those days.

When will bodybuilding go back to the time where bodybuilding was just about bodybuilding and not about looking like a freak on stage?  When will guys like Dexter, Martinez or even newcomers like Heath and Dugdale get a chance win the Mr.Olympia while keeping their symmetrical bodies in check without having to resort to the size game? What goes through the mind of warriors of the past the likes of Shawn Ray who always maintained a balanced physique but never gave into the temptation of the size game out of respect for the sport and himself?  Maybe it's just that the Mr. Olympia contest is not about bodybuilding anymore.  I thought bodybuilding was to supposed to be healthy.  I thought bodybuilding was supposed to make you look good every day of your life not just 1 day of the year.  I thought bodybuilding was supposed to extend your lifespan.  I thought bodybuilding was about building all parts of your body in a way that would allow for your body to flow and look like that of a work of art.

Have we truly lost grip with the meaning behind this sport and, most importantly, is the Mr. Olympia fixed?

Yo, do the math:
41 years of Mr. Olympia Contest
10 different Champions:
Dickerson & Samir
Multiple winners include:
Scott
Sergio
Arnold
Columbo
Zane
Haney
Yates
Coleman

8 out of the 10 claimed the title at least Twice
2 out of the 10 claimed the title Three Times
4 out of the 10 claimed the title Six Times
2 out of the 10 claimed the title Seven Times
2 out of the 10 have claimed the title Eight Times
1 out of the 10 will go onto win it an unprecedented 9 Times!
Ummmmmm, ya think barring an injury, jail time, kidnapping or over sleeping dude wont win again, even if we had different judges?
Appearently, he is THAT GOOD!

Shawn, I like those stats and the speedy response, but do you really feel Ronnie is THAT GOOD?  What Im trying to say/ask is why do you think these judges keep crowning him the Mr. Olympia?

Also, this isn't necessarily against Ronnie.  Many Olympias came and went where Yates did not deserve a win and due to his "size" they gift wrapped it.

Well, I believe Kevin beat him in 2000
I believe jay beat him in 2001 but he failed the Drug Test so I had no problem with Ronnie keeping the title.
outside of that, to answer your question, "YES!"
Ronnie is that good, so far Jay has not closed the gap on him in terms of OVERALL fewest flaws.
But hey, I'm not a judge, i just happen to agree with the final outcome.

Onemorerep you raise some good points.  I'm not a fan of the size game.  Unfortunately, big beats small pretty much every time.  I'd rather see guys like Dexter and Darrem at the top of the sport.  Aesthetics has clearly taken a back seat to mass.  I doubt it changes in this lifetime.  Even with the "new" guidelines, nothing changed at all.

That said, I don't have a problem with a guy like Ronnie winning.  He is probably the hardest working man in bodybuilding.

ND having lost a thread on this, will now seek to contaminate this one while providing no insight on the original question.. ;)

My suggestions that some (only some) of the results were very suspect have been dismissed by this guy-the predictable from an Iron AGE/Flex type.

Here are some shots of Yates looking no better than 3rd place. Of course, all the other guys had their own flaws, but these shots aren't even close..

Onemorerep, or anyone else who hasnt ever competed...The MRO isnt fixed. LOL... There will ALWAYS be a different view, a different physique preference.

Sure, someone may look better than the winner in your eyes, as a fan- but it just boild down to what the judges want, and what it the intention of "the look" for the year.

IN any bodybuilding contest you go to, there is almost ALWAYS controversy about the top 5...ALWAYS...especially if all of them are in great shape...I mean you tell me, if 2 competitors have the same awesome conditioning, but one has much better legs than the other, but the other has a much better back....OK, now YOU tell me how would you judge them???????  I

ts just like tha tman. Bodybuilding, as much As I LOVE IT, and go train 5 days a week, week in and week out is a RETARDED SPORT. PERIOD. Only cool thing is learnnig from pros and staying in fit and be the best you can be. Hey, you might not grace a USA Championship stage, but maybe you will be one of the biggest/best physique where you work, etc...Or at the gym you train...its the same, just a microcosim.

Have we truly lost grip with the meaning behind this sport and, most importantly, is the Mr. Olympia fixed?

OH GOD...HERE WE GO AGAIN...ANOTHER RACIST ASS TRYING TO HIDE HIS CONTEMPT UNDER QUESTIONS ABOUT A FIXED CONTEST.

Yeah I can just imagine in America (of all places) that a contest would be FIXED so a BLACK man would win. OK..Everyone line up as I pass out the PROZAC,  because the DEVIL has lost his mind.

While for years that 'no leg' Arnold won contest and praise, no one said...Hey HE HAS NO LEGS!!! While Dorian's waist spread as wide as the Atlantic ocean that separates America from england, tore one muscle after another, looked blocky and clumpy, could barely pose to save his life, and won one undeserved award after another...no one stood up and complained. But let a man whose muscles have muscles and is aesthetically more pleasing than most of the bodybuilders out there and all we hear are complaints of fixed contests, unfair judging or comments on why is the reigning winner still winning...how dumb is that? Maybe he is winning because he IS THE BEST!! not because he is BLACK. Now sad to say it is always someone white on this board worshiping another hasbeen white BB who has been retired from the sport for years or in some cases the BB is DEAD yet is still being compared to the reigning champ. This is like complaining about Mike Tyson winning match after match in his hey day...was it because he was Black or was the fight FIXED...OR WAS IT BECAUSE HE WAS THE BEST!!?..

To say BB is such a small sport yet the backbone of all sports, it is amazing how much mindless complaining there is within and amongst the fans of the support. My opinion is if you are that unhappy about the sport and its judging, the fact that steroids are used, that the competitors are turning into the real SUPERMEN that have been depicted in the comic books for years, then give up on involving yourself in the sport; save us all the comments and complaints and let those and only those who really enjoy the sport do so without the snide commentary or complaints.

By the way...How many football and baseball games have been fixed? What about wrestling and boxing matches? horse races anyone?

So far as my opinion of Jay Cutler...his character showed on the last Olympia as he complained "All the Mr. Olympia has to do is show up and he wins" (translation...he won because he is BLACK) Jay you sorry BASTARD...Jay should be given the DIPSHIT AWARD!!! ...NO, JAY...All a contestant has to do is show up with his SHIT TOGETHER and he will win. Ronnie has his SHIT TOGETHER Now go and get your SHIT TOGETHER AND STOP BEING THE BITCH WE ALL KNOW YOU ARE ANYWAY!!!!!
