You should not only take into account the amount of calories but also his energy expenditure which is extremely high given his usage of gear and his activities (training twice a day, doing tons of cardio)
Too many Americans pay too much attention to their diet. Instead they should move more, whether it is cardio, weightlifting or householdactivities. Take for comparison the eating habits of our grandparents, their diet is considered 'shit' by current standards - insane amounts of fats- but they burned up a lot of calories and were less overweight. Current Americans simply don't move, they sit all day in the office and use their cars for everything. Even blue collar workers use less calories than in the past due to use of mechanical tools and other various machines.
