It's a figure of speech saying that the us military guys/gals are fighting for our freedom.  Yes...we here live in a free society thats being protected by our servicemembers.  If you don't believe it for a minute....think what would happen if all of a sudden the us military was gone.  Right now, there are a bunch of terrorists organizations that would love to bomb American cities just because it's America.  Because we're on their soil & creating issues in their backyards....it gives them less time to organize & to break out completely.   Would you rather have this happening in your backyard or theirs? 

I agree with your points that even I strongly believe that we should be more involved in our own homeless & poor before other countries.  But, that can't exactly happen.  Sometimes we have to get involved into other countries affairs to ensure resources & diplomatic ties that are essential to our own country.  There is a fine line & I would love to pull all of our assest together & only worry about Americans....but that's never going to be possible.

Yes...there's a lot of service members that don't want to be over in Iraq/Afghanistan/Middle East.  Then again...the majority of guys I know....love their job & want to be there.  Just be happy there's more guys that want to be there vs not wanting to be there.  If you don't believe me....how come there hasn't been a draft proposed or initiated?

IMO, the oil companies are playing chicken with the consumer, in light of the fact that govt mandates will make prices fairly controlled once the next administration scoots in with "sweeping world energy policy changes).  Cash out now.  They droppped prices once consumers slowed buying, but they went back up since..

You may already realize this but the good part is that you can donate (during the year) money to causes that the government recognizes as charitable contributions which then lowers the amount of fed. taxes you would have to pay at the end of the year.  Thus, you would have more power in choosing where "some" of your "tax" dollars go.

In fact, if you give enough in charitable contributions, you'll get money back!  Last year you could actually receive credit for your entire income for the year (it's only a certain percentage usually [probably because of Katrina]).

So, monetary donations are a win for the organization you choose to help as well as a win for you (tax-break and peace of mind re: where a percentage of your dollars went).
