Why does FLEX always make bodybuilders and their stupidity seem inspirational?
First Chris Jalali's article and now this.
I like Shawn Perrine's writing and overall that article did seem balanced and made it clear that bodybuilding escalated Don's (alledged) genetic predisposition, but I think an appropriate title for the article would have been "Long on stupidity" lol.
Either way, I did get the sense that Shawn felt competitive bodybuilding was not good for Don at this point in his life and health so that's good.
I'm generally a fan of Perrine's writing. He's second to none when it comes to covering the Ironage, and has helped put the focus on many greats of that era. His articles on The Myth still ranks as the all time best IMO.
That being said, the article on Long lacked any critical perspective whatsoever IMO.
How the contest prep will affect Long's body wasn't brought up at all.
Perrine didn't question Long about the relation with the person who gave up a kidney either, the sister.
In short, the article is nothing short of garbage.
Sad to see, especially when it comes from a guy with high journalistic integrity, cred and skills as Perrine.
If Perrine had restrictions when going into the interview he should've never agreed to it.
