Bertil looked great in power shots but didn't look so great in the other madatories and when he tried to get shredded he lost a lot of his tradmark size .

Look at this shot from the back in 83 he looks very narrow !!

Lots of politics. A whole generation of BBs left the scene prematurely around that time-Robinson, Mentzer, Padilla and Szkalak to name a few.

How about he just wasn't good enough to beat Samir? no it has to be politics  ::) compare that shot which is from 83 to this one and its easy to see that he was good but not better than this .

Did you post it HERE? Posting it on a board with 5 members doesn't count as "beating me to it".  ;D How about a specific link, thread or location.

I think Bertil had Samir beat in 1983 on poses which caught the eye which would lead some to believe he won.  On further inspection I would give it to Samir, but at the original time of viewing I was more in awe of Bertil's physique.

Samir all the way. Samir was more pleasing and in better condition. Bertil was a freak though. Got to give him that.

pkaz were you there the first day Bertil trained at World's when he warmed up with 500.  Kal was running all over gym all excited when Bertil came in.  He was like a little kid.  Bertil was just huge and ultra strong.  You were there when I was there.

IMO the 83 Samir ,98 Ronnie, 93 flex, 74 Arnold and the early Sergio are thew best physiques ever. Lookat his back!!!! Simply crazy.

i like samir.. he has bertil on conditioning
but no waay in history did he desrve to beat bertil...
...yes his back was better...but what else..
everybody seems to judge the competition on who has the best back....
bertil made..samir look small and flat... arms chest shoulders...
no comparision..
also musle insertion and muscle shape.. genetically...bertil miles superior
...
bertil all the way
choice is an illusion

I always laugh when people say Bertil should have beaten Samir. In 1983 Bertil was in 5th place he wasn't even close to Samir , not by a country mile .

I'm just waiting for that one idiot to come on this thread and start with the "big beef it betil" routine.

IMO, Bertil out-massed Haney and maybe even Arnold.  You look at the guy and can't believe his career wasn't legendary.

It's the age old argument Herculean Mass (Bertil) versus Shapely Mass (Samir). You can't help but admire both but you're always going to prefer one over the other. It comes down to personal preference. No one is right or wrong.

...so whai kumplainn?

Do you think Makkawy and Zane deserved to beat Fox that year too?

Makkawy was unreal. Tough call without seeing them side by side. Zane... no.

No, I was not there that day, but you and I seem to have been in the same place much of the same time during that time frame.

Bertil was awesome. I had just started bench pressing and he walked over and asked if we could train together. As you remember, he had that accent and was somewhat soft spoken. He was spotting me on inclines and wanted me to add more weight so he says, “just do it, just do it, I will tip the bar for you”, which meant spot me. The guy was incredible strong. We always finished chest with 5 super sets of dumbbell flys and dips. Everything was a minimum of five sets. Always.

Keith, those were the days, right??
